Siri Is Smarter Than Rep. Todd Akin

Reposted here with permission from my fellow blogger CarolCarolina at Immizen.com

Rep. Todd Akin was probably finishing his victory lap after winning the Missouri primary to unseat Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and high on endorphins when he made the following statement to voice his stance on abortion in cases of rape:

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. Let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.”

His statement is sad in so many ways…even the right-leaning Washington Post is reporting the story…I'm saddened and like most times when a Republican speaks, I'm left with questions.

Which doctors? Please tell me because if any of them are in my insurance network…OMG

What is legitimate rape? Is illegitimate rape legal?

“The female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” REALLY? No wonder Republicans think women don’t need insurance companies to provide free contraceptives, why, we’re equipped with a “shoot that sperm down” system.

“But the punishment ought to be of the rapist.” Does the state of Missouri not punish rapists?

I’m lying, I don’t own an iPhone and that was my futile attempt at humor because frankly I think his statement is so very sad. There are others out there who share his ignorance of the female reproductive system. And some of them may even be doctors (Michelle Bachmann’s husband perhaps).

I know I can detest most Republicans and will most likely always vote for a Democrat, BUT I would never vote for a Democratic candidate who is beyond batshit crazy. Why do smart Republicans who know better still vote for these people? Why do Republican women voters hate Democrats so much that they rather have an ignorant, misogynistic guy legislate on their reproductive rights and health issues when he doesn’t even understand the female body?

Rep. Akin has since begun walking back his remarks but hopefully the damage is done and the silver lining I look forward to is the greater possibility Senator McCaskill can hold on to her Senate seat in this race that is projected to be an upset for Democrats.
