2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat was your most satisfactory presidential election win?
If Obama wins in November, will that trump it?
I'm young, so, the only election I ever remember my guy winning at the national level was four years ago and it was one of the happiest moments of my life. I expect this November to trump it of Obama wins.
What's yours?

(27,247 posts)The first time I voted for someone who won.
Of course, he had also been my state's governor for many years, and I fully expected him to be a good President. That optimism lasted for a couple of years, until the Republicans took control of the House and things started going downhill.

The Clinton era was going to mark the end of 12 years of Republican bullshit.
I became even more optimistic in August 1993 when Clinton made his first visit back to Arkansas since becoming President. The event was publicized beforehand in local newspapers, and I decided to go to the airport in Springdale to greet him. There was minimal security-- we just went through a metal detector, then were allowed to wait for his plane outside the little terminal. He arrived on a very hot day at the airport (amazing that that little airport could accommodate Air Force One), and as soon as he got out of the plane, he immediately headed toward the crowd of well-wishers and started shaking hands. And I thought, this guy is truly a President of the People.
And then the goddamn Republicans took control of the House the next year and started throwing as many monkey wrenches into the gears as they could

(2,404 posts)because I spent tons of time campaigning, but one that sticks in my mind is the Carter/Reagan election of 1980. I was a teen, but remember watching in fascination as the electoral map turned (mostly) red.

(28,151 posts)I wasn't vested in the 08 primaries but I thought the Obama people were going to be in for a big heartbreak. I was surprised (and delighted) when he beat the Clinton machine and then...he won!
I actually cried.

Obama in 2008 was special in its own way and his re-election will be even more so.

(10,558 posts)I was pleased when President Clinton won the first time, fairly ok with the second time.
There are a number of reasons I say President Obama's election was most satisfying. Having him as our first bi-racial POTUS is cool because he is flat out a cool guy anyway.
I heard his keynote speech at the DNC live on TV when he stumped for Kerry. While listening to that speech, he almost had me in tears, I kept thinking that THIS MAN even more than Kerry should be running.
The consequences were too dire to imagine when it came to a President McCain, so I was equally thrilled and relieved when Barrack Obama managed to win. Yes, I was VERY satisfied but I would be lieing if I didn't add that I was equally relieved.
I know the consequences are even more dire now, so I will likely be even more relieved should President Obama get re-elected. Satisfied? Well not the right word. This election is his to win or lose....I expect him to win but will be utterly horrified if he looses.
When Clinton was reelected, I was really happy, but when Obama gave that keynote address, I was in tears with you. Damn.

(10,558 posts)I heard early on that she was going to push for an Obama run at the Presidency. That made my heart skip a beat.....and then when he actually threw his hat into the ring, it was one of the happiest days of my life. All in all, I am proud as punch to call him MY PRESIDENT! For her efforts, Ms. Winfry has earned my most profound gratitude..

(177 posts)In 1992 I was 23. I missed voting in the 88 elections by a few months. I did not hate GHW Bush as much as some, but I was enthralled with Clinton/Gore. When he won, looking so young and fresh, I thought nothing n the world could stop him from making our country a better place. Damn it if he didn't do just that. I still miss him. The affairs suck, but his political style was wonderful. That was the first election where I felt my vote truly counted.

(25,415 posts)After 8 years of Bush it was very satisfying. Clinton won in '96, the first year I could legally vote. But no one thought he would lose.

(2,217 posts)Bush was feeling real sure after the Iraq invasion, and I think thought it would carry him through the election. But I remember the Clintons talking about many social reforms, and no Republicans are ever interested in that. But the people had changed priorities.
