3. I'm always wary of those numbers.

Mostly because I've been polled twice in the past year and given an answer of "approve" in order to boost the numbers because I don't want a GOP president. That said, I don't really approve. I think he's done a piss-poor job but I'm stuck with him. I'm certainly not going to donate to him or work for his campaign like I did in 2008. I think the President is worse than disappointing, I think he's pretty much a spineless feckless twit of a quisling that I'd gladly be rid of if we had a different electoral system that encouraged multiparty races.

I wonder thus how many of my fellow liberals answer the same way because he's a better placeholder than Newt for the next 4 years when we can finally put a real liberal into office.

Is there someone waiting in the wings? Where are all these throngs of "real liberals" who opted out of a primary? This was their chance. What happened?

I fear that your idea of a "real liberal" will never ascend to the presidency; not in this country. The country just isn't where you are. Hell, not even the Democratic Party is where you are. And as for your hard "work and donations in 2008", with your attitude I don't think you'll be missed. It's four years later, and many have come of age to take your place.

Nobody is going to primary a sitting President. That said, I expect a political anti-moderate hardening of mutual extremism if the political climate doesn't improve by then and an in-viability of any moderate in the primaries on either side.

Also, if you think partisans don't lie to pollsters, you're naive.

10. What about those that are liberals/progressives but no longer Democrats?

At least a third of all liberals I know are former Democrats that are now independents, including myself.

I see these polls posted almost every day, and I always wonder what a polls would look like that asked, 'Are you an independent liberal?", 'If yes, were you a Democrat in 2008?', or 'As an independent liberal, do you support President Obama?'.

The current question does nothing but show us that people that call themselves a liberal AND Democrat, support the Democratic President. I'm not sure why that's something to brag about, unless you know how many liberals call themselves Democrats.

Liberal Democrats are not yet quite an oxymoron, but they are an endangered species. I too had been a Democrat my entire life (first voted in 1984) and no longer call myself a Democrat. As a matter of conscience, I could not identify myself with Obama's continuation of some of Bush's policies. I refer to myself as a leftist or a left leaning independent.
