Republican Convention Viewership Drops by 17 Million

August 30, 2012

VIEWERS:

2008 = Sarah Palin (37.2 million)

2012 = Paul Ryan (20 million)

Paul Ryan, the Republican vice presidential nominee, drew fewer viewers than the 37.2 million that nominee Sarah Palin attracted four years ago.

The final hour of convention coverage last night attracted slightly more than 20 million viewers, according to Nielsen data reported by two websites, TV Newser and TV by the Numbers.

Although the news media is being very critical of the lies in Ryan's speech, they're also talking about how great he is for the base and how passionate and intelligent he is.

But if far fewer people watched his speech compared to Palin's, does that mean he may actually be less successful in motiving Republican voters than she was?

Will there be less Republican turnout than the media predicts?

The official #GOP2012 convention Twitter page was touting that 6x (SIX TIMES!) as many tweets had discussed this GOP convention... than the total of both 2008 conventions combined.

Problem is...

Twitter users in 2008 = 2 million
Twitter users in 2012 = 500 million

Not quite keeping up, are they?

Twitter was in its infancy in 2008, whereas almost everyone is Tweeting today.

Not a big deal that the amount of Tweeting about this convention has gone up.

People much more interested in the storm than the GOP nutcases.
