(9,067 posts)I was there...and Oprah in SC turned the state.
Some celebs attract a crowd, but some have the respect of certain age and demographic groups. Some don't matter.
For example, in SC today, John Stewart would make a difference.

(3,245 posts)Lena Dunham is, so I'd give her endorsement a lot more weight.
They are all nice to have, though.

(15,438 posts)turn it into a weakness. Republican political strategy 101. It's now being used against Hillary Clinton by the extreme-Left in their quest to destroy the Democratic Party from the inside a la Tea Partiers in the Republican Party.
The moment someone says they want a female president, you get called a sexist. The moment you mention Hillary Clinton's vast experience, you hear loud criticism of "Washington insider". The moment you mention you're a Democrat and want to support the strongest Democratic candidate, you get attacked with "sheeple over people". But the moment you mention you're a Hillary Clinton supporter, you're a "third-wayer" because, you know, they're the true Democrats.
I've learned not to take them seriously anymore. I'm convinced that these people are not and have never been Democrats.

(24,411 posts)quite a bit.
Lena Dunham, JL Curtis and Katy Perry at her JJ Dinner event.
Hillary's JJ crowd was comparable to Bernie's JJ crowd, about 2,000. Bernie didn't have any pop stars there. I wondered if that meant that Clinton's crowds would have been anemic, had it not been for Perry's appearance. However, I think Clinton's crowd size would have been the same; because when it comes to politics, Iowans could give a rip about celebrities.
Because we vote first, we take our candidate choices and the vetting process very seriously. We feel that it is our obligation to vet these politicians, attend their rallies and even challenge them with questions. It's a caucus, not a vote--and people can (and will) advocate for their first choice. We consider campaign events to be an important part of research on our way to making our final candidate choice.
So, I would say that celebrity appearances, at best, do nothing. At worst, they look gimmicky and add a "People Magazine" angle to what would otherwise be a serious, information-based decision-making process.
In short, I would advise against this in Iowa. It's not going to help, and it could make the candidate appear weak and unable to draw attendance on their own merits.
Iowans are in no mood for bullshit. They hate in-fighting and attacks. They just want good information, honesty and a good sense of who the candidate it. Gimmicks, like celebrities, are an irritant.
It would make sense if a big name attached to a political issue was helping (like if Al Gore stumped for a candidate's environmental record).
B-list Hollywood types and pop stars, not so much.

In my state we have caucuses, too, along with primaries. Primaries draw in many, many more voters and are much more representative as a consequence.
