Anthony Foxx Endorses Hillary Clinton for Presidenthttp://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/politics-government/article53957680.html
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has announced his endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Foxx, Charlotte's former mayor, called Clinton a champion of American families.
Hillary Clinton is my candidate for President of the United States, he said in a statement. She is best positioned to continue the progress made by President Obama on a range of issues from strengthening our economy, to making the right investments in our infrastructure, to common-sense gun safety laws, to ensuring a fair criminal justice system.

Where does Foxx stand on GW and alternate transportation and clean energy? If he is as smart as you say, he would be endorsing Bernie in light of the GW science.

(11,240 posts)As my local mayor, he championed local light rail and street car projects that, in addition to being environmentally sound, have been ridiculously successful from an economic standpoint.
And part of the "same old establishment"? He comes out of the old school AA Charlotte community, hardly establishment. And he sure as hell didn't make a mess of things when he was here.
Believe it or not, people can hold different opinions from yours and still be honorable and decent human beings.
Early in his political career, Foxx gained a reputation as a quick study of local policy and led a number of City Council initiatives, including the development of policies to enhance job creation into the urban core of Charlotte, environmental efforts that led to a single stream recycling program and greenhouse gas reduction policies and acceleration of the region's transit plan.

(13,685 posts)That he doesn't support Bernie. But then, one does dance with who brung them.
Hill and Bill have not even professed what it would take to make the changes needed and Foxx outta know that, and that Bernie is our best hope to further public transportation and clean energy uses which means no more fossil fuels. Or have you forgotten that wisdom?
Pretty much I do question the honorability of people who still think we can continue to run society on fossil fuels.

(3,795 posts)Whenever someone says that someone in a position of power should be listened to over what we, as individuals, can discern for ourselves my hackles go up. It's authoritarian-minded to the extreme. And, when we have a political system that works the way that ours currently does, all it does is ensure that the status-quo remains firmly entrenched.
Since you are apparently supporting Bernie I would imagine you might not be too fond of the status quo as well. Perhaps. Perhaps not.

(11,240 posts)with the AA AND progressive communities in my state. Because Foxx was a rock star here even before he went to Washington. People in my city and state know who he is because he was a solid progressive who GOT THINGS DONE (light rail, street car, urban revitalization) without forgetting his roots.
Don't like his opinion? Then don't take his advice. But he is a standup guy from humble beginnings who has done much for the people of my state. And also, if you rip him in Sander's defense, you AUTOMATICALLY alienate anyone who liked him first.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)He is a solid progressive from a very modest background, who has a keen vision and a strong track record of getting things done.
If you read the newspapers or watch the news these days, you know that the gap between the wealthy and the poor and middle class is widening. This opportunity gap knows no boundary. Its not confined to race. Its not confined to urban areas there are too many rural poor in America. It is not confined to geography. This gap exists all over America... {A strong economy, health, housing, education, jobs} are pillars of opportunity, but they are not the only pillars. There is another pillar of opportunity that too frequently gets left out of the conversation, and that pillar is transportation. At its best, transportation should not just get someone from the Barrio to opportunity; transportation can also bring opportunity to the Barrio ...We should talk beyond taking people from their doorstep of opportunity. We should begin to talk about bringing opportunity to folks doorstep...
But, to do that, we, as the community of transportation planners, engineers, contractors and decision-makers must embrace our role in closing the opportunity gap. I say this because a few generations ago, our community didn't do that. We built highways and railways and airports by carving up neighborhoods, leaving bulldozed homes and broken dreams and sapping needy families of the one connection to wealth they had, which was their homes. Every community in America has a thoroughfare that resulted in what folks are now calling structural discrimination. Instead of a lifeline, transportation facilities in some areas became walls. This wall conveyed to those affected that the checks they wished to cash at the Bank of Opportunity would be returned due to "insufficient funds." Their children could not run as far as the horizon because they could not see the sun behind the overpass. New housing, good grocery stores, pharmacies and other neighborhood services could not find them because these communities were trapped. They even gave these walls names the Mason-Dixon line for the Staten Island Expressway, or the Berlin Wall in Syracuse, just to name a couple.
The vestiges of this system are still there. The walls are still up. And, yet, as the bill for deferred maintenance comes due, this generation of American transportation planning can be the most restorative in our history. Imagine bridges and overpasses that are more than just north/south throughputs; imagine unleashing the ingenuity of our nation's land use planners and engineers and decision-makers to make those facilities more inviting and approachable and maybe even complimentary of the surroundings on the east and west sides of them. Imagine meaningful public input processes that use technology and capture the views of the public at a stage of planning where that input can actually be incorporated into a project. Imagine some of the most challenged communities in America: instead of being limited by their environs, theyre opened up. Jobs are coming in again. People are working. The American Dream has come alive in a new and even better incarnation, one in which everyone really does have a shot and no zip code is confined to being the hardest to get out of.
I make this point to you folks not because I have read about it some great periodical Ive lived this. I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1971. And I promise you that as my 19-year-old mother looked at me no one would have guessed that I would be the 17th Secretary of Transportation. We lived with my grandparents through my formative years in a home that was two blocks away from I-85 and two blocks away from I-77. Those walls were walls I saw every day. There was one way in and one way out of my neighborhood. And somehow I ingested this idea that my physical surroundings were all there was to the world.
I was fortunate to have access to a great education. I was fortunate the streets were relatively safe. I was fortunate to have come out of a place that folks might have called nowhere. But when you have seen how hardworking people trying to do everything they can to find a little crack of daylight just to provide for their kids and maybe add a little into retirement and hopefully have a future for generations to come
when you see people working that hard
you want to make sure they have a real shot.

First, he's a lawyer. And we know how much lawyers love Hillary...
He was also sued for ripping off an employer:
In 2001, he returned to Charlotte to work as a business litigator for Hunton & Williams.[14] While a member of the city council, he retained his position as a litigator at Hunton & Williams, switching to part-time status.[17] In 2009, he left Hunton & Williams to join DesignLine Corporation, a hybrid electric bus manufacturer, as its Deputy General Counsel. In August 2015, the Trustee for DesignLine filed suit for $420000, clawback against Foxx on the allegation that Foxx didnt actually do the job he reportedly held at DesignLine.
About Hunton & Williams:
Huntons website touts its representation of Wells Fargo, Altria (aka Phillip Morris), the telecom Cingular, and defense contractor General Dynamics, among many others.
Hunton also has a big lobbying business in Washington. Its clients include Koch Industries, the private energy giant whose owners fund a range of right-wing and libertarian causes. (See the 2010 lobbying records for Huntons work for Koch here; it involved fighting climate change legislation.) Other clients include Americans for Affordable Climate Policy, which is funded by the coal industry, the Gas Processors Association, the nuclear power company Entergy, U.S. Sugar Corp., and so on.

You might remember Mel Watt for being a corrupt piece of shit that tried to secretly defund the House Ethics Office.
"Representative Melvin Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, who proposed the budget cut after being a target of the ethics office last year, told fellow House members that he offered the amendment not to retaliate, but rather because the work by the ethics office, he said, is at times abusive, causing unnecessary embarrassment of House members."
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/22/plan-to-cut-budget-of-ethics-office-fails-house-vote/
Watt was investigated because:
"Watt held a Dec. 9 fundraiser and soon after withdrew a proposal he had introduced to subject auto dealers to tougher regulations, according to congressional records. The fundraiser generated checks largely from finance groups, including Goldman Sachs and the Investment Company Institute. In an interview, Watt said he will answer the OCE's questions and declined to comment on the investigation."

Did you know that he clerked for a federal judge who is revered as one of the the country's leading civil rights champions? Are you aware that, under his leadership, the Department of Transportation is investigating the closing of DMVs to determine whether it discriminates against minirity residents? Have you bothered to learn ANYTHING about him other than the fact that he's a lawyer and somebody sued him?

Our Charlotte office has a vibrant pro bono services commitment and regularly exceeds the Pro Bono Challenge standards for demonstrating a commitment to the community. We have a number of programs that encourage lawyer pro bono participation, including our signature program with the Center for Children's Rights in which our lawyers and staff work together on child custody advocacy cases. We regularly work with Legal Services of Southern Piedmont on Medicaid disability appeals and SSI disability appeals. We also support VITA's tax assistance program for indigent persons and NCLEAP's program for providing legal advice to North Carolina not-for-profit companies on leasing, duties of board members, human resources and other matters.

Secretary Foxx and FAA clear Santa and his sleigh
WASHINGTON, DC. In late-breaking news, the Department of Transportation has approved an application submitted by a Mr. Kris Kringle (d/b/a "Santa Claus" for special air transportation operating authority.
That authority, limited to a single night, was announced in a hastily-assembled press conference by U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. According to Foxx, Kringle has outfitted his vehicle, an "airborne sleigh," with an 8 RP engine and has on hand a ninth reindeer equipped with supplemental safety and navigation gear. The Federal Aviation Administration has inspected the unusual vehicle and certified its airworthiness.
In addition to sharing Santa's concern for supplemental nutrition along the marathon route, the Secretary also reminded the red-suited pilot about the Carolina Panthers jersey on his wish list.
Once Santa is airborne, responsibility for tracking his progress falls under the authority of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
Now in its 60th year, the Official NORAD Santa Tracker will monitor the red-suited pilot throughout the duration of his flight. Consistent with NORAD emphasis on transparency, the Tracker, complete with countdown clock, is publicly accessible at www.noradsanta.org.
All of us at DOT wish the "jolly old elf" a safe and successful flight.

(11,240 posts)He is the smartest, most talented local politician I have ever seen. His first City Council run was so crazy good for a first time local guy, made my political nerd heart beat faster..... And his two terms as mayor were smooth as silk. I was tweaked when Obama stole him for Transport Secretary, but believe he will return, when the time is right, to run for Governor or Senate.
Here is an article about his early life from before he got called up to the bigs.

(11,240 posts)I got a call from a volunteer and an invite. Which is weird, because I don't do local Dem Party work at all, just gritty c3 voter education and registration, really under the radar. Most local politicians would have no idea who I was, at least then. But Foxx somehow knew that I did work with underserved and under represented groups and reached out. I could kick myself that I didn't go. I had two little ones in diapers then and couldn't get a sitter or something
But yeah, now he is practically a Koch or some bullshit because he does not genuflect at the altar of Bernie. Kochs and their little brother Art Pope f'ing wrecked my state. These smears of good people who are fighting the good fight are getting really old.

(6,107 posts)Not a surprise, and not relevant to the actual voting which will occur. Do you really think this endorsement will affect anyone's vote?
BTW, I'm a Bernie guy but I do not think Hillary is evil incarnate.

(14,249 posts)so why expend your energy crapping all over it if it really is so meaningless to you?
Perhaps you think it's a bigger deal than you care to admit ...

(14,249 posts)Point taken.
Now that your work here is done, you might want to skip on over to the "Tommy Chong is endorsing Bernie Sanders, but it's not for the reason you think" thread and tell your young, delusional, unknowledgeable buddies how silly they look dancing excited jigs of delight at this latest development that means nothing ...
