I think that the hardcore repuke fuckstains will just cheer him on...but the indepentdents who tend to think way more than the gop locksteppers will stop and realize he doesn't give a shit about them.

a lot of people think government handouts are only welfare. They don't consider anything that they get to be handout. Even if they are getting W.I.C. or food stamps. Whatever they get is earned, what other people get is a handout.

It's got what plants crave: a Nixonian "silent majority" narrative, a dog whistle to gin up resentment against the lazy good-for-nothin' (i.e., predominately non-white) Obama voter, the notion of Obama as this Max Schreck socialist draining the lifeblood of a proud German people, and the sort of hate-on generally reserved for surrogates or Newt Gingrich. (Although the "Shure wish I was Latino!" part will probably forestall any attempt at cross-cultural outreach.) Romney's challenge heretofore was his own base, so this could help with his "enthusiasm gap" or whatever it's called, although you'd think the virtual abolition of the income tax would be a libertarian wet dream (and Romney's not the best messenger for a "pay more taxes!" message), but in terms of motivating the limbic systems of The Base it doesn't get much better than this, although it's hopefully cancelled out by pissing off half the country (although let's face it, most of the 47% might be self-loathing repubs who think the real 47% are people even poorer (or less caucasian) and therefore less deserving of human dignity.)

But I don't see him totally collapsing the way others do. I just don't see him falling 10 points behind in the polls at this stage.

Unfortunately it's very unlikely to happen when you have a country that is very divided and where some people will vote Republican regardless.

Think of how many other terrible things have been revealed about Romney so far and yet he still remains competitive.

But it's always possible that one of these events could prove to be the tipping point.

The democrats just need to talk about the people who are in the 47%.

Here's a hint:

The average person who pays no income taxes looks less like this:

and more like this:

though there are also some people who look like this:

and some people who look like this:

and loads of people who look like this:

and quite a few people who look like this:

there's also some people who have no income who look like this:

In summary, though there are actual mooches in the system, most people either hope to make enough to pay income tax or have previously made enough to pay income tax.

The people who are paying attention are pretty much set in stone already.

The conservative members of the 47% will never see themselves as such. After all, they will assure you, their extended stay on their unemployment rolls is only a temporary thing until their small business takes off or they get that excellent job that is just around the corner or until the Republicans remove those obstacles like taxes and regulation and free the job creators to innovate blah blah blah. They are not at all like those lazy freeloaders who need to take control of their lives.

Expect the Mittster to tell seniors that of course he was not talking about them, no not at all. Mitt loves Seniors. He won't cut their benefits like Medicare, no really, not even if the the programs are falling off the fiscal cliff . He'll swear this on a stack of Bibles and the Book of Morman too. He'll be lying but at least he's the candidate who "looks like a President" in the opinion of so many seniors who grew up when "those people" knew their place.

There is so much stuff in those comments to get Dems and Independents and even some on the right angry. Its really stunning. Stunning that it got out, stunning that this is how he really feels and stunning the effect its going to have on the race and TV ads. Its an amazing gift for Obama and could be talked about from now till the election.

You know its bad because Fox News is trying to bury the story online and on the air. They have hardly mentioned it at all- except to point out that he held a late night presser. I find this fascinating.

I don't think that many voters will change their minds at this stage, but almost every individual who currently favors Obama will now vote for him. It basically solidifies Obama's support who currently holds the majority of the electorate. I don't see how Romney can win any of them over.

Tue Sep 18, 2012, 07:34 AM
Sep 2012

this like 100 other things to this point with Romney - something that would KILL a democratic candidate like a meteor hitting them, but for an R, a bee sting that alone would sting a bit but heal, but in total with all the other stings end up killing him.

Sep 2012

Because now there is the 47% statement PLUS the "I'll kick the can down the road" statement on Israel and the Mid-East, and there are more videos to come.

The question is, does each one add another crack to the Romney campaign until it shatters, or will the public become desensitized to them after awhile and cause them to fade in impact?

It could go either way.

Let's not forget that moderate Republicans exist. The poll lists them as a category. They will likely be turned off by Romney's insensitive comments.
