Fire, ellisonz & pinboy marched together in L.A. Sunday for Trayvon Martin (PHOTOS)

We met up and joined together Sunday afternoon in a march and rally sponsored by the Committee for Justice for Trayvon Martin, which grew out of a similar justice march sponsored by Occupy the Hood L.A. one week earlier. The march to Leimert Park in South (formerly South Central) Los Angeles was followed by a rally there.

Getting some honking love from passing motorists as we assembled before the march...

Marching (with lots of supportive honking from the street traffic)...

Another (notice the kids in hoodies marching)...

We passed signs of love in the community for President Obama...

Finally, we reach our destination...

...and rally under the palms...

L.A.'s New Black Riders, a group styled after the Black Panthers, was there. They chanted, “Trayvon Martin, never again! Oscar Grant, never again! Too black, too strong! All power to the people.”

Jubilee Shine, one of the organizers, urged the crolwd to vote in elections at every level of government...

Fire, ellisonz and I decided against posting a photo of the three of us, but here's one of me...

It was great to meet ellisonz and to see Fire Walk With Me again. We missed U4ikLefty, who was busy at an event across town in Hollywood for the 6-month anniversary of Occupy L.A., but DUers/Occupy Underground members will continue to meet up at L.A. actions.

I can hardly look at that poor boy's picture even now without imagining it to be my own boy. OMG. When this horror first happened some asshole was going on about how the shooter maybe had a point, blah, blah, blah. I cut him off after a minute, it was that or be facing assault charges in immediate future, and said "What if it had been Alex?" (His kid) Yeah, argument fucking over.

And that's the thing too many people don't get....it could be any one of our kids in this story~~though the darker your skin the better your chances.

Thanks for speaking for all of us moms, you were completely right imo.

Besides, you were holding the hammer and sickle props all wrong, and you were making that face then, too. You gotta learn to take direction, dammit--especially when you're privileged to be working with an AUTEUR!

I had my Guy Fawkes mask & Jesters hat for the April Fools / 6-month anniversary. I also wanted to do some impromptu outreach for M1GS to the Hollywood passers by.

Thanks for representing pinboy3niner, Fire, and ellisonz.

Some days I wish I could be in two places at once…this was one of those times.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon…out on the streets!!!

As you had told me in advance what you'd be wearing, you were easy to spot--great photo of you in costume, too!

We missed you, but we understood that you had obligations to fulfill elsewhere in the streets for that action.

We also know that we'll be seeing you in the streets again. And besides, I think it's your turn to buy lunch, so you know I'll be looking for you, bro.

I'm glad that you were able to do the H'wood OLA anniversary action and to use that to promote M1GS--and thanks for being there and doing the hard and time-consuming work as one of the key planners of the #Occupy L.A. M1GS!

Until we meet again, #Occupadre...

You did a powerful and moving post on the subject from your perpective as someone who is not only concerned (as are we all here), but who has to live with fear for the safety of your child every single day ( http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002505362 ).

I'm glad that I had a chance to respond to that post, and to post one of these photos there. But I balked at the idea of posting a link to this thread there, at the idea of promoting my own OP in your thread.

At the same time, I'm glad that you independently found your way here to see the story of just one of many, many marches and rallies and protests that are continuing around the country.

You are not alone. There has been a powerful upswelling of support and outrage and protest that transcends racial and ethnic and all other kinds of boundaries.

Trayvon's killing was a tragedy, and no one coud have predicted that it would ignite a new civil rights--human rights--movement. For all the cynicism that's been embedded in us in recent years there are still things that give us hope...

And one thing that gives us hope is that people are rising up, all across the country to demand justice. And we won't stop until we get justice.

No, MJ, you are not alone...

I'm going to post a link to this thread in mine. It's important!

All of our children are too important, precious and dear to us to allow the rightist/baggers bastardize this into one of their "blame the victim" circle jerks.

PEACE!

Occupy was supposed to have a convergence here this month and it's very sparse. A lot of locals I meet ("independent minded" affluent liberals) talk about how they supported Occupy until they "overstayed their welcome". I tried to explain that was the idea

Of course that's to be expected on the East Coast. It's like in Seattle where they encouraged somepony to "jump" because their bridge suicide attempt was blocking traffic... keeping the trains moving on time, that's all a lot of people seem to care about... people with high-paying stable jobs who own all the houses and vote. Social issues is the only thing keeping them "liberal Democrats" which is why it's so juicy that the Republicans have decided to wage war on women's rights. (One of the same people I mentioned above went on to say how furious their entire family was at the Republicans.) Also it seems like the black community here is a lot more conservative than out there in LA... a lot. Heck, I even had a conversation with an African American friend who isn't too sure that Trayvon didn't pose a threat to Zimmerman.

37. Second Trayvon Martin rally planned for downtown L.A.

April 9, 2012 | 10:59 am

Civil rights groups and protesters in Los Angeles plan to to hold a second “Million Hoodies March” Monday (today) in downtown L.A. to demand justice for slain 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Organizers say they expect at least a few hundred people to congregate at Pershing Square at 4 p.m. for a rally that will precede a march to City Hall at 6 p.m. Marchers will deliver letters demanding justice to representatives for U.S. Rep. Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles), according to organizer Zsanaé Davis.

Bass and members of the Congressional Black Caucus had planned to accept the letters and deliver them to Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. in Washington, D.C. But with the announcement that Florida prosecutors will not send Martin's case to a grand jury, Davis said the effort will help keep media attention on justice for Martin.

...

Davis, who initiated Monday’s event, said this march will be different from the last because protesters will walk in silence behind the box of letters.

Officer Sara Faden with the LAPD said police have a permit on file for the protest and added that she was not aware of any problems arising from the event two weeks ago.
