Related: About this forumRant: Victim Blaming
I have had it up to here with this shit.
What other forms of victimization trigger this behavior, besides crimes (almost always committed by boys and men) against girls and women?
The only one I can think of is some types of natural disaster victims (why do they live there? why don't they move?)
Can anyone else think of any?
I'm really losing patience with people whose first reaction to stories about girls and women being wronged is to point out the reasons why it really is all their fault anyway. Really fucking fired of that shit.

(9,760 posts)Really, anyone without power.
Not to diminish the outrageousness of the particular victim-blaming you refer to.

Home gets robbed : what did you think would happen if you left your house unattended
Hit and run : why were you out so late
shoplifting : well if all that merchandise wasn't on display it wouldn't be such an easy target for thieves.

If I tell someone a secret, and then they run out and tell someone else...
How many would criticize me for trusting them?
How many would criticize them?

(998 posts)We could stop all this rape and stuff if we'd just stop being a w.o.m.a.n.
It's OUR fault we are Vagina-People, right?

(115,101 posts)If we simply followed 'the rules' they'd stop treating us like shit.
We need to stop focusing on victims, and focus on VICTIMIZERS.

(41,955 posts)And while its completely vile, what it amounts to is asserting or defending privilege-----and a whole lot of whining.
It's also Republican/conservative type thinking, which to my certain knowledge is much like the justification for petty (or not so petty) crime.

(68,868 posts)piled on the woman whose baby got shot.
In a very creepy way, it paralleled rape victim blaming.
People mentioned things like hair gel and eating fried chicken as reasons to suspect the mom of arranging for herself and her baby to be shot.
Would this have been the reaction if a man had been shot? I do not know.
It seems as if people believe that only 'normal' women can be a real victim of a crime. If someone's suffering from mental illness, she's probably making it up. So, the best way to go into denial about an attack is to degrade the victim, thus making her guilty of . . . something.
