Clock turning back on American women.

Last edited Mon Jan 20, 2014, 03:30 PM - Edit history (1)

Hillary Clinton, in an essay that published this week, cautions that opportunities for American women could vanish if the U.S. does not prioritize their economic advancement.

“[F]ighting to give women and girls a fighting chance isn’t just a nice thing to do. It isn’t some luxury that we only get to when we have time on our hands. This is a core imperative for every human being in every society,” Clinton writes in “The Shriver Report: A woman’s nation pushes back from the brink,” a report that features essays compiled by Maria Shriver and the Center for American Progress.

Clinton warns that American women lag behind other first-world countries in a slew of important attributes, including life span, equal pay and employment opportunities.

“In places throughout America large and small, the clock is turning back,” says Clinton, noting that while women now hold approximately half of U.S. jobs, the country doesn’t crack the top 10 rankings of countries where women thrive economically.

Women earned about 81 percent of males’ median wages in full-time jobs in 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ annual report released in October. That’s an increase from 62 percent in 1979, the first year comparable data was available. The BLS says women who never married earn nearly 96 percent of a man’s wages; married women take home considerably less, at 77 percent.

The hardest hit being the most basic element of a women's liberty, choosing whether or not to have a child.

The assault on women's reproductive freedom over the last two years has been horrific.

Or do you simply not care? If you are determined to avoid reading the article and prefer to talk about Walmart and the Iraq war, I suggest you post something yourself in an appropriate forum.

This is an article talking about the fact that women in the US have fewer opportunities than in other parts of the developed world. It's not about fantasy presidential elections or whatever axe you have to grind.

The status of women at Walmart, BTW, is well known. The company practices systemic discrimination in wages and promotion. But of course we are told we don't experience any sexism in America and we should be lucky we can drive and don't have to wear a burka.

Got it. I'm glad Mrs.Clinton is concerned about inequality. It would have been more beneficial if she spoke out on such things when she was in the board of Walmart.

So popular that they throw vegetables? I would love to see the polling from Iraq on Clinton. Of course you're just making things up so you won't be able to provide that.

But let me say this, Forgo, I notice you didn't mention anything about the US torture policies in your post. Obviously it isn't important to you. Why do you hate America?

certainly isn't progressive or open minded. You really should not be in HOF. You are free to post about those issues in another forum. You are purposefully disrupting this discussion to make it about you. I for one have no interest in you or the fact you are annoyed Clinton might run for President. This thread isn't about how much you hate Clinton and how some feel compelled to place on her responsibility for all the ills of the United States. It is about the CONTENT of the article Secretary Clinton wrote: about the status of women in the US vis a vis the rest of the developed world. You have nothing to say about that, and I will request you cease disrupting this thread. If I should ever post a thread arguing for Clinton as a Presidential candidate, your comments might be appropriate there. There are probably at least ten hate on Hilary threads now. Go join in on one of those and promote another person who voted for Iraq, like Biden or Kerry. The game is transparent and frankly I find it boring. HOF has a specific SOP that you are not in adherence with.

I find little more tedious than the tendency of many on DU to reduce issues to their assessment of individuals, of the good guy vs. the bad guy (or woman). If I wanted to engage in that, I would have posted this is GD. There is a reason I did not. I also really despise playing fantasy 2016 presidential election when no one has announced a candidacy. This is not MSNBC.

Women at Walmart are treated infinitely better than women working in the Marianas Islands, and women in Fallujah are treated much better than women in the People's Republic of Congo, so then we cannot talk about any other issues than the enslavement of women in American overseas factories and the rape of Congolese women.

I mean, otherwise your derailment would have been for naught.

And I hope she'll continue to do so. I just wish she would have spoken out when she was on the board of Walmart. Before factories were collapsing in Bangladesh and bombs were killing tens of thousands of women in a war she voted for.

You can of course answer your own question, and expound on it-- to make the point you so desperately want us to understand, yes?

Otherwise, well... yours may or may not be anything more than an accurate illustration of lacking the courage of one's own convictions.
