Ever search the news for stories about brutalized girls and women?

I'm sure hardly anyone does. It's punishing.

There are blogs detailing the atrocities that happen in war. There are blogs (many) that cover the great harms that befall men in divorce courts. There are blogs that detail dog bites.

Are there any blogs that detail the many violent and sexual crimes targeted at women because they're women? Domestic violence blogs? Sexual assault blogs?

If you know of any, please let me know. Searching for such information ... it's an onslaught.

Recently gaspee posted about a similar type of blog in the UK, but it only lists the names of women who are actually killed. Not those who make it out alive. It's good to know this is starting. As she said so well: This is not about statistics. This is about people. All these girls. All these women. All of us so inured to their suffering, because, well, that's just how the world is. You protect yourself as best you can, try to ignore it, and get on with living your life. At least that's how it's been viewed so far.

But we need to change this. We need to stop seeing this as a problem that we should simply accept, and IMO part of that is no longer treating this like it's less worthy of special attention than dog bites and handfuls of unfair divorce court cases.

I was trying to find something like this this morning when I unfortunately stumbled on this story, and I was reminded of the blog in the UK... and that like so many of the women brutalized all around the world every day, her story would just be another blip in the news.

Belmont-Cragin sex assault suspect faced similar, dropped charges
Tuesday, January 07, 2014

January 7, 2014 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- The man charged with the sexual assault and attempted murder of a 15-year-old girl last month is no stranger to police and prosecutors: He was charged with another sex crime last summer.

The victim was found beaten in the back yard of a home in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side Dec. 17 in the 2400 block of North Long. The teenager remains hospitalized. She had been in a coma after undergoing several brain surgeries. Now, prosecutors say, she is relearning to feed herself and walk.

The honors student was walking to catch a bus to school early to work on a class project.

"The defendant grabbed the victim, struck her on the head with a blunt object and dragged her through a gangway," said Jennifer Gonzalez, Cook County State's Attorney Sex Crimes.

Charged is Luis Pantoja, 25. He's deaf and goes by the nickname "Silent." In court, he required the assistance of a sign-language interpreter as prosecutors provided graphic details of a young girl beaten, raped, then left to die.

What's horrific is how very many women's stories are never even heard, never make the news, and who end up only saying anything years later, to close friends, loved ones, or therapists.

If you haven't read Reviving Ophelia yet, it really is worthwhile reading.

My own forgotten childhood history became clear to me when I was 50, after many years of therapy (with several different therapist).

Disgust me! The men who attack women even when convicted get these light sentences...... What will it take to get these criminals locked up for life? It needs to be one attack and your out, no three strikes!

Restraining orders are a joke, punishments are negligible, it's not taken very seriously until someone dies.
