My oldest daughter is going to have a girl! I'm so excited-- she already has three boys.

My daughter and SIL are ex military, with a couple of unfortunate side effects from that. But I have them in my heart and soul and my grand kids are going to know they are the future-- they get to change it. My oldest grandson can already talk 'feminist' and is such a decent young boy. The little guys will get it when there a bit older, my second daughter and SIL are all about raising their little girls to be string independent women.

I raised them as a feminist, an vehement anti-racist and a liberal. A lot of it shows more the older they get, and they leave off youth culture. I never realized how influential parents are when your 'kids' hit their 30's

Thank you for bringing back memories of the happiest day of my life: the day Mrs. Ed and I huddled together over that desk phone in her office with the receiver pressed between our heads, waiting breathlessly while the nurse at the other end of line read the results of the amniocentesis.

"girlgirlgirlgirlgirlgirlgirl...", we whispered softly together. We knew, at our advanced age, that this might be our only child.

And we held our breath as that nurse declared, "...it's a healthy, baby GIRL!"
