Reports of sexual assault on college campuses spurred the White House earlier this year to launch a task force to examine the issue. The group’s report was issued on Tuesday, and the first sentence of the report echoes what both the president and vice president have asserted in public: “One in five women is sexually assaulted in college.”
Where does this oft-repeated statistic come from? We dug into the data so you don’t have to.
The Facts
This statistic is derived from a 2007 study, The Campus Sexual Assault Study, which was conducted for the Justice Department’s National Institute of Justice. The researchers, led by Christopher Krebs of RTI International, also surveyed men, but the statistic cited by the administration focuses on women so we will look carefully at that part of the study.

2. It looks like these incidents at least implied in the article, are where a date is involved. So I

would venture speculate that it involves rape or attempted rape.

I would like to think study was very specific in its criteria and didn't include things like a goodnight hug or kiss, unless those action were forced upon someone.

In several of our my environments we were required to take courseware and tested what is considered appropriate behavior and inappropriate behavior. I thought most of it was common sense, but with this study, the armed forces incidents, and more and more of it occurring in the work place I guess it isn't.

Perhaps students as part of the course work should be required to take a class on inappropriate behavior. Geez, it looks like it really has to be spelled out based on this, so I think that would be a good start. Obviously, it isn't happening on the home front

3. The university my daughter is going to next year

have 9 reported per year. She gets Clery Act alerts and has had two this past month.

I worry about her. She will be alone with mostly male students for periods of time (she is in mechanical engineering which has less than 10% women). I am hoping she gets the dorm near the mechanical engineering building to reduce her exposure in transit (one of the assaults was by two men at 10:30 at night near the horticulture building).

They had a Take Back the Night event this month where 80 people showed up so it did not get a lot of support.

I have been doing some research on personal defense items which she might be able to carry. Haven't committed to anything yet. I wonder if a personal alarm would be the best option???
