Where’s All The Animal Vagina Research?

In 2009, duck penises took the Internet by storm. Thanks to a newly published study and an eye-opening video, people learned that while most birds lack penises at all, male ducks have huge, corkscrew-shaped ones. During sex, they extrude these into females at high speed. Since then, duck penises have become a short-hand for the “ain’t nature wacky” genre of science writing, and an unexpected focal point for debates about the value of basic science.

And during that time, one important part of the original study was lost. People forgot that the story of duck penises is really the story of duck vaginas.

Duck sex can be fiercely competitive, and several males will often try to force themselves onto a female. Their extreme penises help them to deposit sperm as far inside her as possible. But duck vaginas are also long and twisting. They’re lined with dead-end pockets and they spiral in the opposite direction to the male’s penis. This shape stops the progress of a male’s ballistic organ—something that Patricia Brennan proved by getting drakes to launch their penises into variously shaped glass tubes.

As I wrote in 2009, a duck’s vagina is an “organic chastity belts that evolved to limit the effectiveness of the males’ lengthy genitals.” If she actually wants to mate, she can change her posture and relax the walls of her genital tract to offer a male easy passage. If not, she makes him insert his key into an inconveniently shaped lock. To a casual observer, the male looks like the one with the power, but the female is actually in control, thanks to her convoluted genitals.

Wha? In control? Dude no way, everyone knows nature leaves females helpless nurturers.

No video-- to emphasize what the word "bitch" really meant. People took offense. My point is the articles point, if we are going to study mating habits, do it from all angles, not just a corkscrew penis.

The person insisted calling women "bitch" was perfectly acceptable, but objected to your using the word in its proper meaning, to refer to a female dog that you described in copulation. That, she insisted, was obscene.

I wish I could remember who that poster was.

I have heard that many such investigations are performed in person the several States such as Alabama, DC, Hawaii, Kentucky and Texas. Of course they might update the law sometime ...

7. Hyena Clitoris Research

For a long time, the species was believed to be hermaphrodite. In fact, only the shape of the gland marks the difference between a penis and a clitoris in spotted hyenas. The erection of the penis or clitoris, which is voluntary in both sexes, is certainly a display of submission in both male and female spotted hyenas. Studies have also revealed that the clitoris plays a high social role in the clans of these animals.

The subordinate female individuals lick the clitoris of a higher-ranked female as a clear sign of submission and obedience. Nevertheless, this is not something that happens only amongst females, since males (which are inferior to all females) and cubs also lick the clitoris of dominant females. There is also the situation when females lick each other's clitorises, which is a greeting or an affective behavior that strengthens links between individuals. Oppositely, a female will never lick the penis of a male, since it is subordinate - the highest ranked male is inferior to the lowest ranked female.

Giving birth through the clitoris, even a giant one, sounds like a nightmare.

Using Hyena's, there is actually fascinating research into the clitoris which is not, as so many seem to believe, a miniature penis.

The clitoris is the default state. The penis emerges from something like a male clitoris during development.

Of course the default anatomy for all animal bodies is female anyway. Maleness is kind of a developmental detour.
