The woman who made a video about catcalling is already getting rape threats

Updated by Kelsey McKinney on October 29, 2014

Shoshana B. Roberts
- who walked around New York City for 10 hours while being filmed by a hidden camera so that she could record the harassment she received from men on the street - is already getting rape threats.

Roberts's video, which after a day online has already racked up more than 1 million views, documents the over 100 catcalls, whistles, and other forms of harassment she received over the course of the day. One persistent character walked alongside her for five minutes and wouldn't leave her alone...

The video was produced by Hollaback, an organization dedicated to stamping out street harassment and intimidation. Last night, Hollaback tweeted:

The threats are still coming today. These, for instance, were posted while I was writing this article:

The original posting of the Catcalling OP in GD is gone although it had 92 recs. Things are still messed up there.

I just about threw a brick through the TV this morning when Hoda Kotb made a comment about not being bothered by flattering catcalls and its only when that guy follows the young woman that she gets creeped out.

7. They're teaching woman watching this something I would have never seen with a liberal media.

They are not only 'working overtime to throw the election to the Republians' as TMN says, they are busily degrading and making life hell for women and minorities as much as was done in any fascist nation. And by the same method, total ownership of the mass media within the hands of some particularly odious oligarches. With a Senate majority, the next few years are gonna be hell on Earth for women here, and abroad as what we do affects them.

We asked 10 women in eight countries to record every instance of street harassment—every catcall, every ass-ogle, every creepy look—for an entire week. The results? A strong argument for just becoming a shut-in.

...

Some women think it’s a compliment; that a stroll down Confidence Avenue is not only healthy, but that hearing the opinions of male strangers, usually shouted from streetcorners or a moving car—Can’t stop! Too many other girls to catcall!—is “validating.” This is…a questionable argument to make. For most of us, catcalling is mortifying at best; at worst, it makes you want to pull out someone’s eyeballs out with your bare hands.

Kati Krause, Berlin’s correspondent, “Sexism is much more insidious here (so much so that I sometimes miss the more overt type in Spain).” From her diary:

“Two sleazy-looking middle-aged men in suits were smoking outside the opening of a cinema-turned-art space and shooting looks at the young women around them. ‘You can forget about the art, but the in-crowd, the in-crowd is here,’ one of them said.”

Hey, ladies — catcalls are flattering! Deal with it

Summer to me means three things: heat, hemlines and hard hats.

It’s the time of year when I can parade around in a skimpy dress with strategic cutouts that would make my mom wince.

And when I know I’m looking good, I brazenly walk past a construction site, anticipating that whistle and “Hey, mama!” catcall. Works every time — my ego and I can’t fit through the door!

I’ll never forget my first time: At age 20, interning at MTV in Times Square and taking advantage of the company’s liberal summer dress policy, I was wearing a tightly molded pink tank top and black capris when I strolled by two construction guys on a lunch break.

How cliqued can you get? Construction workers? How about that dude in the hardware store, the creepy dude in Barnes and Noble, the guys who yell at you across that street on and on ad nauseam?

Quit picking on "construction" workers and stop acting like an idiot.

Of course people, female and male enjoys being admired, but being constantly cat called gets old at about the age of 14. And you got about 30 more years to go--more in some cases.
