Event to honor women’s rights pioneer

There’s a special place in Coral Gables where a courageous woman met with friends and supporters to fight for women’s rights many years ago.

Roxcy Bolton, the famed women’s rights activist, made her home, 1301 Alhambra Circle, a historical landmark through her tireless work. The city of Coral Gables will honor Bolton with an unveiling of a special commemorative photo of the house at 10 a.m. Monday at City Hall, 405 Biltmore Way.

“It’s just one more way for us to honor the work that she’s done for the women’s rights movement both locally and nationally,” said Naomi Levi, assistant to the city manager.

Bolton, 88, was one of the first Florida women to join the National Organization for Women after its founding in 1966. She founded and presided over the Miami-Dade Chapter of NOW in 1968 and fought for the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s. Bolton also established the nation's first Rape Treatment Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1974, which became a nationwide model for treating rape victims....
