Women Are Poorer Than Men in Every State

Added bold is mine. I feel that when we discuss woman and poverty, as well as white women with privledge, I believe it's important to acknowledge the struggles of women of color. As my HOF friends understand, poverty is not a contest, and facts are facts, not an exersize in interpretive inguinuity, or an free opportunity to scream "what about me?" Addressing the problems and causes of impoverished women, and finding solutions needs an open mind and an open heart, prepared to take wounds. Truth hurts.

But this is a stunning statistic, not shocking of course, or even unknown, I know there are many men who do not understand their privledge. A poverty index is a good indicator as far as I'm concerned

The saying goes, “girls go to college to get more knowledge.” But what does it mean when the number of women living in poverty increases, even as their rate of education goes up?

Not only will women not make equal pay within our lifetimes, but according to a new study from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, they’ll be living in higher poverty rates, too. The newest installment of IWPR’s series, Status of Women in the States: 2015, the report found a decrease in the percentage of women living above the poverty line to 85.4 in 2013 from 87.9 in 2002.

As with the gender wage gaps, the issues are more pronounced in the Southern states—particularly Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. But nowhere are women completely insulated from the issue. The findings, using data from as far back as 1996, suggest that despite significant gains in education over the past two decades, women remain severely behind men in both economic stability and business ownership.

Nationwide, 15.5 percent of women live in poverty, compared with 11.9 percent of men. But the discrepancy in poverty rates worsens when considering race. The poverty rate for Native American, black, and Hispanic women is nearly twice the rate for white women. The number is highest in the Native American community, where 28.1 percent of women live below the poverty line (compared to 11.7 percent of white women). Single mothers fare even worse, listed as twice as likely to be living in poverty than single fathers, 43.1 percent vs. 23.6 percent.

As it's completely unprofessional to ague politics with patients. Generally, they are less well read, less informed than their liberal counterparts. The independents, too, seem to have a better grasp on political history and current events, so anecdotally, RWers are the most misinformed people I ever meet. And happy about it--always slightly vindictive.

I've always meant to--I have more willingness than knowledge--but how cool!

Sorry you have that experiance with women in it. I am going to my states Nurses Association convention this month. I was talking to a nurse so anti-Union my jaw dropped--she was from Canada originally, and had bad experiences apparently, I briefly explained what unionizing did for our profression (as well as mention the US is NOT Canada) and it was like she couldn't hear me. Whoosh, was the sound of my points going over her head. I finally told her she sounded scared from her experiance, and she acknowledged she was.

The number of conservative nurses is disturbing, although they are in the minority. One left a book around--on purpose I'm sure--something about "I was an aborted Baby" a debunked story about a failed abortion, and the person it became. While I don't doubt that has actually happened, this book was anti-choice propaganda. I don't discuss politics with her at all.
Immigration reform is another issue I hear RW talking points on, or, literally "they've been in this country how long and they can't speak English?" Very ugly talk.

I was looking at telescopes--got a used cheap one, and a friend gave me a slightly better one. I live in the city, so not much joy. THEN I read "start with a good pair of binoculars" argh. Fortunately there is a guy with a fabulous telescope who sets up at a local lake and does free 'viewings'

It's just not the same. Maybe when my daughter settles in her country home I'll pursue it again, within my means. Won't get sucked in. Won't. Get. Sucked. In. Yikes!

Who twice was offered a grade 12 job in the federal government. She is an 11 now but a grade 12 comes with a nice pay raise but does include some meeting with the big boss every week with the other 12's. She doesn't want to deal with the meetings which is just an overview with what is going on in the department. So because she said no they opened up the position and of course a male gets it...stays a year and leaves for a 13 at another agency. So again she is offered and says no thanks. Ugh! We also have a grade 7 who I have known 20 years who was offered a 9 position but she said after 40 years she is comfortable where she is...she is only 58 so even if she is in the position 3 years that is a huge retirement increase...she is under old system which was a better retirement. Not a lot of examples but those are my biggest disappointments. I love both of them but they are are happy where they are and really that is what counts in the end I guess. I am male and always want the next grade increase. I have been in federal government for 5 years and went from grade 6 to 7 to 9 in a short time and that was with hiring freezes.I am looking for thet 11 as we speak. I retired military which is why I am late into the federal government.

Women not trying for higher positions because of the culture, or inconvenience. Even in my own field of nursing, for instance, I have zero desire to be a manager or a nurse educater. Since it's a female dominated industry it should be noted that there is NO lack of women who do, and are.

And help their future retirement plus lift some of the statistical numbers. I just wonder what the numbers would be if woman only used money as a motivator instead of other factors that often trump money.

If a business is childcare friendly and ok with breastfeeding for instance, that takes some pressure off. There's a number of other factors, of course.

Remember the old Doonesbury sequence where Joanie discovers that bete noire Woodrow is being paid more than her despite her seniority? It was brilliant in many ways, but what I liked most was the subtlety of the art: while Woodrow is standing around doing nothing except explain why women don't do work equal to men, Joanie is working her ass off as she listens. True beauty, IMO, and I doubt it is very far from the truth.

ergo, creating our FACTS, lol..... that women do not work as hard, as proof of that suggest otherwise.

there was one men were pissed at. pissed cause they said they were being picked on. the boys got lower grades in earlier education. see... see.... it is wrong. and be need o level that playing field.

the girls.... and this was the conclusion, was getting "perks" giving them higher grades.

that was the headline. that was the theme of the story, riling our MRA men up.

looking at the FACTS.... like, girls sat at attention in class, in the front, listened and didnt act up, STUDIED, did the work, ..... you know, all the things our kids are suppose to do in school

got fuggin' higher grades.

that is so not fair.

for REAL!!!!
