Dear Friends!

Hello.

I came to this forum a couple of hours ago - having just achieved my 10th post - to post an article I had written about in the General Discussion forum, for discussion here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=7287749

I had seen, when I did a site search, that the author has been well received here in the past:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/125547631

and the subject seemed very much "history of feminism": the evolution (or not) of women's relationship with our sexuality.

But first, I was reading a couple of the threads here, and following some links out of interest. In the thread about the violinist subjected to the harassing emails, I went to her instagram site and read this:

https://instagram.com/perv_magnet/

https://instagram.com/p/9KSDcdk8YU/

I was particularly amused by one doltish harasser, the first in the left-hand column at the first link above, the second link being the expanded version with comments.

I couldn't copy the image, so I quoted the line I found amusing:

"Fuck you and your violen"

... as an example of the stupidity of the people responsible for the harassment.

And I added what it had immediately brought to my mind, and the main reason I found it amusing, followed by my comment on the general problem of the harassment women face on line.

I evidently made the serious mistake of thinking that people would be familiar with the great Gilda Radner and her character Emily Litella, and the really rather famous "violins on television" skit. I actually looked at youtube for a video of the skit that was playing in my mind, but found only a re-enactment. Here that is, anyway:

I was mocking the moron. Exactly as, I now see on looking at the expanded version I have linked to above, did Mia:
perv_magnet Will jerks and spelling ever co-exist? #sexandviolens

I added a comment that I would have thought made it clear that I empathized with and admired the young woman.

My post was hidden by a jury, after it was reported as:
No, that is not a quote from the article. I can't believe someone actually came into a safe haven feminist group to post this. Rude, insensitive and really bad spelling.

Well, I can't believe ... that. Is it my length of tenure? I may look new, but as I've said elsewhere, I'm really rather old, and have been, if not on the front lines at all times, very much in the sisterhood of feminists for several decades. As I heard said when I visited England: I'm not so green as I am cabbage-looking. A simple click on my profile and journal should have resolved any questions, really.

I would still like to discuss the article I raised in the other thread.

But before initiating a discussion, I just wanted to make my situation clear, to avoid any misunderstanding or suspicion if I do so.

What I thought, apparently wrongly, was an easily understood post mocking an illiterate misogynist and making favorable comments about his victim was interpreted as something else altogether (although I really have no idea what -- of the only two explanations, one who voted to leave said "I see this as a comprehension issue on the part of the alerter" and one who voted to hide said "I just love the library! Take some time out, go to one, and pick up a dictionary while you're there&quot .

Thank you!

and possibly should use, whenever you're being snarky on site. A lot of folks will simply take any post at face value without it.
