'ello. Extremist here. I'd like to apologize in advance for my stubbornness and cynicism.
Specifically, I identify as communist, anarchist, anti-psychiatry, apatheist, and generally anti-prejudice and pro-human rights. However, some have also described me as racist, sexist, ageist, classist, and ableist.
I believe all humans are equal; however, I do not believe "equal to" means, or should mean, "the same as". We are all different and we each have our own talents, and I hold it's most likely that those who are physically different are also mentally different. In fact, I'd go so far as to say some may not be able to meet any of our common standards.
However, in my mind, admitting to these differences does not legitimize prejudice. Even if these groups are different, they're also ultimately arbitrary; the boundaries between groups are blurry, and any individual could be one of their group's "exceptions". No matter what standard you set, anyone, from any group, with any upbringing could meet that standard, and you'll only know if you give them a chance.
Even more than that, though, even if an individual truly cannot meet our standards, we should not judge them. They may be different, yes, and they may even be less capable of living in and contributing to our society, independently; however, not only are they, quite often, less able only because of the social and environmental context they live in, but they are also not responsible for their misfortune. They are not "less than" anyone else, and they do not "deserve" to suffer.
Regardless of our differences, we should do everything in our power to support each other and create a world where we can all live happily, even if we may never achieve that goal. We should never leave anyone behind, except by their own choice.
If we have to be uncompromising and challenge every conventional wisdom in the process, so be it. Even human nature itself should not be allowed to triumph over what is right.
People can change. The world can change. We only have to try.
At least, that's what I believe.
