to something like Photobucket (free) and copy the image's URL and paste it in your DU message.

So you scanned it, and now it's in your computer. Very important step.
You need to get the image into a photo hosting site. There are several; I use Photobucket.
Accounts are free, although if you give them a little money, you lose the ads and you get more storage space.
Then you just follow the prompts they give you to get your photo into their site, and then you can post it here.
Be sure to use the preview function here on DU to make sure you've done it correctly. This will show you your image as it will appear when you hit post.
