One Christmas my cousin's husband bought

his and her sawed off shotguns.
He was a wealthy restaurant owner and they lived in the most upscale part of town.
He was extremely conservative and this was in the 70's. He gave me a book titled "None Dare Call It Treason." It was a John Birch type book.
When I asked him why he got two sawed off shotguns he said, "it's for when they come." I asked who are they he said, " the poor people."
He believed the poor people were coming to get them because they were wealthy and he was going to go down fighting.
A gunner post today reminded me of this.
I think paranoia is one of the motives to own a shotgun back then and today. Just plain fear sells guns!

Ultimately, I think a lot of them have the fantasy of being able to shoot someone. The scumballs are out there, after all, and "they" always seem to get away according to George Zimmerman. A lot more of the wacko gun nuts wish they could do what Z did.

2. Fear sells a LOT of things

including the rights we tend to toss away to have "safety"

fear sells lots more than guns. go to an airport and try to get on a plane with too much hand lotion in your carry-on. try to drive around near the southern border of the US. hell try to cross into the US and see how "safe" you feel at a checkpoint.

fear sells all kinds of garbage you may or may not need. do you use antibacterial soap? fear of germs sells a hell of a lot of that kind of shit. in fact the fear of social ostracism is what almost ALL advertizing is about. fear that you won't smell right, measure up to the other consumers, have the right shoes, sunglasses, beer, car, electronic gadget etc etc etc.

of course fear sells a lot of guns. it is a prime motivator for all kinds of behaviors.

marketing strategy of the right-wing gun lobby: fear of government, fear of criminals, fear of strangers, fear of Liberals, fear of the UN, fear of Arabs, fear of black people, and even a fear of Hollywood zombies.

The American gun culture thrives on fear and uses it as an excuse to amass larger and larger arsenals of lethal weapons. SYG laws are based on "fear of bodily harm," and used to practice legal vigilantism. The American Jihadists use fear as a rallying cry:

TPN head Judson Phillips emailed members a column — “Declaring War on Americans” — by Alan Caruba, in which he applauds the militias defending the Cliven Bundy ranch and plugs Operation American Spring, while hinting that the demonstration may provoke a violent response from the government.

This gun insanity was never the intent of the Founders when they wrote the Second Amendment, but the right-wing gun lobby has managed to pay for legislation and court decisions which have perverted its long-established and recognized scope.
