General Theological Seminary resolves faculty dispute, but future is unclear

(RNS) The future of the Episcopal Church’s flagship General Theological Seminary remains unclear, even as trustees agreed this week to reinstate most of the faculty who were terminated.

The board of the embattled New York seminary will keep seven of the eight faculty who quit teaching classes and were subsequently terminated, according to Jonathan Roffe, a lawyer representing the faculty. Faculty will teach on a provisional basis until the end of the current academic year.

Roffe said the lone faculty member who will not return, whom he declined to identify, “felt it was the right time to move on.”

2. The back story is he wrpte a letter of defense that brought my parish into the mess.

Apparently he didn't want the school to be known as the gay seminary. He was accused of not liking my parish and thd fact we train 3 to 5 seminarians per year. He thought we were the gay church. He went on in his letter to say he worshiped at our parish and has donated.

He is from the good old boy network and the board of trustees let these things slide. Retired Bishop Sisk who was the Bishop of NY has no leadership kills and he is the chairman of the Board of Trustees.

I know so many envolved and my facebook screen has had so many stories and articles defending the professors. No one was for the dean that I knew except those I know on the board.

3. What a sad situation.

One of the things I learned while teaching is that the administration is always the source of systemic problems. Firing the dean--or the VP or the Prez--and empowering the faculty is a near-universal cure.

4. It wpuld be best if he was removed but it will not happen.
