Anybody see "Watch on the Rhine" last night on TCM? IMO it's an underated gem...

of pre-war anti-fascism. A German underground fighter and his family were sent on a respite to D.C. but are pulled back into the fight by an unscrupulous nazi sympathizer. Bette Davis and Paul Lukas (Best Actor) are excellent as leads and the supporting actors and sub-plots keep your attention as tension and suspense builds.

I recommend it.

Seen it many times as B. Davis is one of my top listers. This movie is chilling in light of what is happening today. We have so many lessons but are we learning anything?

We lost our TV service with TCM recently.

A number of these early fascist warning films from H.wood were shown by TCM several years ago I believe.

5. I think it's one of Bette Davis' best.

She had a tendency to go over the top on many of her roles, but this is one where she underplays the part. She shows her emotions through what we now call micro expressions.

According to IMDB, she asked for Paul Lukas to have top billing in this film, as his is the main part. But the studio said that more people would come to see a Bette Davis film than to see a Paul Lukas film!

6. You're right. It was understated excellence in the way she played the role.

7. I was

blown away by this the first time I saw it and felt it deserved best movie over Casablanca. After a couple of more views I reversed my decision and feel the Academy got it right. I also feel Bogart deserved Best Actor more than Lukas. I still like it but it's seems too preachy after three or more views. Davis is my second favorite actress but in this she was just okay the way Ingrid Bergman was just okay in Casablanca. Now if I watch I'm amused when Lukas takes Thatcher from Citizen Kane outside to shoot him. For me, this film just didn't age well.

9. I doubt it

At the time, the only other nominee I had seen was For Whom The Bell Tolls. Since then I've seen Casablanca,Song of Bernadette, The Human Comedy and The Ox Bow Incident. All worthy of the Best Picture trophy, IMHO.
