Looking for Populist Iconography

Anyone have suggestions for, or past uses
of Iconography that represents Populism?

Looking for symbols, words, images, personalities
that embody Populism as we understand the term.

Just brainstorming, don't think to critically ;~)

1. A lot of people believe that the Oz books had a populist subtext

I don't know if it was intended (though L Frank Baum was a populist, I understand), but they could be mined for imagery nonetheless. I don't know if the fact that the 1939 film has been adopted by the LGTB community helps (since equality for all is a key plank in our platform) or confuses things, though.

2. This machine kills facists

I've always been partial to Guthries statement wrote large on his guitar and of course his This Land is Your Land begs to be the populist anthem if not the national anthem.

The civil rights movement and its theme We Shall Overcome are big populist rallying calls

I would think scenes from FDRs CCC or WPA, Hoover Damn and the TVA are iconic as are bread lines.

I read Baums Oz some years ago with an eye for the the silver/ gold controversy of 1890 populism and had a difficult time seeing the connections.

People can find patterns in anything if they care to look for them.

OZ does have some poignant imagery.

Scarecrow- agriculture
Tin man- industry
Cowardly Lion- politicians
Dorthy- home and heart

Etc. under the photos of elected officials who vote against the people's interests.

Or, under the photos of Progressive Candidates who are challenging them.

Just thinking how to use that speech which was pretty tough on those who work for Wall St.
