Cannabis Advisory Board approves new conditions proposal

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexicans addicted to heroin or other opiates like pain killers may soon be able to apply for a medical marijuana card.

“When it was time to stop taking the hydrocodone, I realized I was physically dependent on them when I couldn’t get a RX anymore, I had never experienced addition or physical depending like that,” said Tony Johnson from Clovis.

Friday, the New Mexico medical cannabis advisory board heard testimony from people pushing to add opiate addiction to the list of qualified medical marijuana uses.

Among those speaking, a registered nurse who says research proves medical marijuana can help those dependent on painkillers lower their doses, and heroin addicts kick the habit all together.

“I’m from Española and I’ve seen how heroin has destroyed my hometown,” said Registered Nurse Anita Willard Briscoe. “I want to save Española.”

The Board did approve the addition of the condition by a vote of 5 to 2.
They will now forward the proposal to the Secretary of Health who will have the final say.

Other conditions presented Friday were Alzheimer’s, ADD, ADHD and Autism.
