Does Cannabis Cure the Common Cold?

How Can Cannabis Help Fight a Cold?

The common cold is caused by a viral infection. It effects everyone at least a few times a year and symptoms can range from a runny nose and sore throat to severe sinus pain. For most people, the common cold is mainly a bad nuisance, though it can be much more problematic for young children and other at risk groups, such as people with compromised immune systems or asthma.

Cannabis can help ease many symptoms of the common cold. CBD has natural anti-bacterial properties which can help fight against the virus itself. Cannabis can also help fight the pain, such as sinus pressure, associated with colds. CBD is an anti-inflammatory which can work to open up the sinus passages and increase ease of breathing. THC can help reduce pain and help sufferers to sleep, which allows their body to rest and self-heal from the cold. Cannabis can also be extremely helpful at reducing headaches and migraines, both which are common symptoms that people experience with their colds.

Stopping Your Immune Response

Dr. Robert J. Melamede, the chairman of the Biology department at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has found that marijuana’s dampening effect on the immune system could make it a good choice for treating your cold.

Similarly to how cannabis can be helpful at fighting autoimmune diseases, cannabis’ ability to reduce the immune system response could keep your system from over working. People often only have severe problems related to colds or flus when their immune system becomes over worked, which can lead to serious consequences like organ failures and even death.

"CBD has natural anti-bacterial properties which can help fight against the virus itself."

That sentence makes no sense.

Bacteria and viruses are different things needing separate treatments.

It really is a shame that our government and other governments refuse to allow real testing of cannabis efficacy. Instead we have this sort of stuff.

It is really difficult and expensive to do the sort of testing that provides anything other than anecdotal evidence that some substance or other does something. But for cannabis it is basically impossible because our government mostly forbids it.

So no, Melamede is not a witch doctor, he just doesn't have the evidence required for reasonable certainty that cannabis can help people with rhinovirus. I wish he did.

It is a reasoned hypothesis by a well qualified researcher who apparently sees fairly solid evidence in the work that has been done to date.
