Sanders surge panics Washington establishment

By Brent Budowsky, columnist, The Hill

Virtually the entire Washington and Wall Street establishments are now in a state of panic about the possibility of a Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) victory in the Iowa Democratic caucus next Monday.

The Sanders revolution of young people, which includes a growing number of young women, independent workers in some labor unions that refuse to go along with the establishment, and liberal populists and idealists of all varieties, is now within striking distance of stunning the political world with upset victories in the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary.

In response, the virtual bedlam that has been behind the scenes in the Washington establishment in recent weeks is now coming into the open. It is a sight to behold!

In the last 24 hours, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has been seen on television criticizing the Sanders proposal for Medicare for all, which has huge support throughout the Democratic Party and, arguably, majority support throughout the nation. Privately, I protested what she said; here my protest becomes public. In a private memo, I wrote that if she wants to endorse Hillary Clinton she should, and state why she believes Clinton would be a great president, a proposition that can be fairly argued, but an argument that has never made effectively made by Clinton herself.

People in panic make mistakes, especially those who pride themselves on being better and smarter, richer and more powerful than the rest of us.

So what does this mean... The last 24 hours have probably been more intense because of this, as well. What is their next move?

She just lost major credibility on national security, not to mention integrity and judgment.

Seizing on Establishment Panic, Sanders Sharpens Contrast with Clinton

Sanders, who has faced an escalation of establishment ire in recent weeks, made a sharp contrast between his principles and his rival's—such as his early and consistent opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the Keystone XL pipeline, the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), signed into law by then-President Bill Clinton.

"Check the record, find out where my opponent was on all of these issues," Sanders said. "It is great to be against the war after you vote for the war. It is great to be for gay rights after you insult the entire gay community by supporting DOMA."

In recent months, Clinton has come out against the TPP and the Keystone XL pipeline, despite her previous support for both projects. Sanders depicted her evolution as calculated—responding to public opinion rather than taking a principled stance.

"It's great to finally, kicking and screaming, come out against the TPP, but where were you on all of the other trade agreements?" he said. "It is great to come out against the Keystone pipeline after supporting the Keystone pipeline."

"So what all of this is about—what it's about—is that what leadership means is not simply following the majority. It means having the guts in certain moments to say, you know what? I don't care what the Washington Post editorial board has to say," Sanders continued, referring to the
