Mister Ed
(5,926 posts)They are uncommonly good, kind, decent, thoughtful people. Their progressive principals are heartfelt, passionate, deep and sincere.
Sometime before the March 1st Minnesota caucus, I'm hoping to persuade each of them to cast aside their fears about Sanders' chances in the general election, and come out and caucus for him.
I could use some advice on that. Do you suppose if I call them rat fucking well poisoners it will win them over?
AdHocSolver
(2,561 posts)Winning the election depends on the relative amount of turnout for the each side.
Bernie generates lots of enthusiasm as seen by the turnout at his rallies. Hillary not so much.
At the same time, the Democratic candidate won't be able to win without the support of some Republicans and some independents.
If Trump wins the Republican nomination, he will have a large turnout of the Republican base, but "sane" Republicans will not vote for him.
If Bernie is our nominee, moderate Republicans will very likely vote for Bernie to prevent Trump from winning. Moderate Republicans wouldn't come out to vote for Hillary and neither would most independents.
Moreover, Bernie would improve the chances of increasing Democrats' chances in down-ticket races.
Explain to your friends that if they really don't want a guy like Trump in the White House, they should support Bernie for President.
Mister Ed
(5,926 posts)Every point is persuasive. Thank you.

(12,126 posts)I am a Sanders supporter but this is beyond the pale and so very offensive to refer to President Obama in this way. Holy hell. What is your problem? Try emulating Sen. Sanders who is truly a gentleman and a man of peace.

(11,366 posts)an indictment hanging around her.
I don't often talk politics with my Mom, but even SHE asked me, just today, what we Democrats would do if Hillary wins the nomination and then gets indicted. Apparently, she'd been watching the news (that the Hillarians want to poo-poo) and is getting concerned.
She plans to vote for Bernie (my whole family does) because she's one of those Boomer women who isn't enamored with Hillary, but she probably would have voted for her in the general. Now, she's not so sure.

The piece that might fall is whether it was hacked due to her negligence. That's what the FBI is investigating - not her emails, per se.

(10,279 posts)Canada, and Norway were bled of resources. Yet today, they all have superior healthcare to that in the USA. I'm not accepting that "it can't be done" as the answer. We need to purge the negative thought that exists in our political leadership.

(12,471 posts)The Netherlands was neutral during WWI and wanted to remain neutral during WWII. As a result, the Germans leveled the largest port in Europe, nay, the largest port in the world at the time, Rotterdam, which was carpet-bombed.
Here's a photo of Rotterdam Blaak train station after the blitz:
Here's a photo of it today:
Most of the buildings in Rotterdam are new. They are still rebuilding the city today, with some of the most modern, artful architecture in the world! Google Rotterdam Centraal Station or Markethal, and see just what I mean. These facilities were just completed in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
Believe me, The Netherlands was not only bled of resources, it was bled of people.
I can tell you this from my girlfriends parents who tell me. They were members of the Resistance in the Netherlands in Texel during WW2.
Their healthcare costs folks between 100 and 150 euros a month. What they get for that is no co-pays. except for a small co-pay for in-patient hospital care. Most prescriptions are free, others are very cheap.
One visit to the country will tell you that we here in the US are not spending money on WE THE PEOPLE, like it says in our constitution. Even as you get off the plane at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, you only have to walk about 50 meters to the train. And the train goes to nearly every part of the country, and it leaves every half hour during the day on weekdays.
If this small country is an example of what can be done when a country concentrates efforts on the needs of the people, I want to see it here in the US. Unfortunately, we have to be the police of the world, and concentrate our tax dollars on building more and more military, while handing out welfare to corporations who are making the largest profits in history.
Okay, I'll stop. Just let me know if you want to hear more. Perhaps in another forum.

(10,302 posts)It took two World Wars to get the UK's NHS. One day, I want some 90-year-old service veteran to tell their story of what life was like for the working poor prior to universal healthcare that's free at the point of delivery, funded by taxation... in the USA. I bet it might mirror Harry Leslie Smith's story.
