Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumVolunteering for Bernie
I haven't done much (really any) volunteering I get emails to make calls, get signatures to put him on the ballot, stuff directly involving dealing with people. I'm not a people person. Doesn't mean I'm a nasty creep, I'm just introverted - and also feeling guilty because I'm not doing those people-involved activities. Today I was very happy to learn (I think it was in the Reddit Sanders group) that we can TEXT for Bernie or call other volunteers instead of cold-calling voters. So, I signed up for doing those two things with Slack. I'm a total newbie with Slack and dont' know how to do anything but I'll find out soon enough.

(24,411 posts)Canvassing and cold calling is not for everyone. I think it's cool that you are trying to help out in ways that are a good fit for you.
One thing you might consider is entering data. When canvassers and callers get intel on the people they reach--that data has to be entered into the database. So, if Joe Six Pack is identified as a "strong sanders" that has to be entered into the computer--for later outreach efforts.
I'm in Iowa and they're always looking for people to do those things.
Also, after rallies, there is a great deal of data to enter, because many people leave their contact info for the Bernie campaign to reach them.
If you have a Bernie office near you, can also donate food and help support the office in other ways.

(14,691 posts)I have done phone calls for Obama and Kerry and others but I did hate it and beat myself up over that (that's a whole other therapy session LOL) anyway THANKS!

(24,411 posts)It's one of the toughest things you can do. You're essentially telemarketing and the subject is politics. It's very tough. And it's not for everyone.

(18,791 posts)It was great.
There were so many that were actually out canvassing and knocking on doors, coming back with piles of forms. I could swing in at different times and work for an hour or two...they were so happy to have the help and the atmosphere was always exciting.
I also made tons (and TONS) of copies, of an Obama window sign because they were impossible to get due to demand. I had access to excess paper and to a couple of copiers...if things get tough again for signs, I've found that Bernie's rally signs are 11x17 and fit on most copiers!
All of this took place in the Los Angeles area.
Currently I'm just giving money, wearing my Bernie shirts and hats every time I'm out, have Bernie stickers on my car, signs in my windows and a yard sign. I try to bring him up to various peoples and at work.
I'm another that doesn't want to do cold calling (hell my old phone doesn't even text)...I'm so thankful that there are those with energy and nerves to do it!
Berners are the best!

(23,867 posts)I'll look into this. Every time I go by the Bernie "shack" in town, there's no one there.

(3,894 posts)for Obama and hated doing both. I've finally accepted that I'm an introvert and won't be changing. Anyway, good that you've found something to do within your comfort zone. I'll have to check out Slack and find out about the data entry. Those would be right up my alley.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

(22,000 posts)Because I'm in South Korea I had to pay $3.99 for unlimited calls via Skype to the US so I can call into the dialer. It works well except that I've found there is too much time between calls which is annoying. Sometimes there is as much as 50 seconds. Overall it is much better than the system Obama had in 2008.

(18,791 posts)Hi davidpdx!
BTW...did you get your Bernie shirt? You were going to have your mom ship one to you, weeks (months) ago.

(22,000 posts)I wore my shirt to work on the last day before finals week. The dress code is semi-formal to formal and I decided to go completely causal since it was my last term working there. I don't get too many chances to wear it, so I'll save it for special occasions.
When I did the calls, I got a lot of people complaining that it was too late to call at 8:15 at night. I did get some who were pretty strong supporters. One of the strong supporters couldn't even remember Hillary Clinton's name. *cough*

(20,453 posts)I'm doing a lot because I have pretty thick skin and I don't mind talking to strangers at all. Here in the Pittsburgh area, I've been encouraged to join Slack, and finally did, thought I'm too busy with work and campaign/community stuff that I've done little more than leave a few message to others in the local Bernie group.
I had never heard of it until the other week. Maybe you can report back here to update me on what you know you can do on Slack.
In Solidarity,
