Bernie at La Raza: Standing Ovations, Bernie Chants w/Video

Hundreds of people are packing into a Kansas City ballroom and standing along the walls for a @SenSanders event. pic.twitter.com/tOUe4QerZl

Justin Wingerter writing for the Topeka Capital Journal covered Bernie Sanders talk this morning to The National Council of La Raza, the nations largest Hispanic organization.

Bernie spoke to a standing room only crowd who started a Bernie chant about 5 minutes into speech, after Bernie had already quoted MLK and The Pope.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Societal ills such as income inequality and youth unemployment adversely harm the Hispanic community, Sen. Bernie Sander, I-Vt., told a crowd at a Hispanic conference Monday morning.

About 250 people crowded into a small ballroom at the Kansas City Convention Center to hear Sanders speak as part of the National Council of La Raza’s annual conference. An hour before the event, a line wound through the halls of the convention center as conference goers clamored for an opportunity to see the progressive candidate.

Bernie talked about being the son of an immigrant and how immigrants prioritize a better future for their children.

Sanders called for comprehensive immigration reform, free tuition at all public universities, affordable child care and a $15-per-hour minimum wage. Sanders, who has pledged not to accept campaign donations from super PACS, said the U.S. Supreme Court’s “disastrous” ruling on Citizens United should be overturned.

Standing ovation and chants of "Bernie" as he walks off the stage.

I love how he "evolves" on major beliefs like other prominent politicians.

End of sarcasm--

Like you said, he has been saying the same things for decades. I'm glad he has been committed to these ideals for so long. I'm even happier that people are finally listening - me being one of those people. I didn't really turn hard liberal until about 2008. Until then I had a hard calling myself that. As a young and stupid voter I voted for bush in 2000. I'll never do something like that again!

Tax the 1% at a higher rate, impose fee on Wall St trades, remove the cap on Soc Sec income(wages), and any corp that hides profits, earnings off shore - in order to avoid taxes - a clear case of tax evasion - haul them into court..pay up plus penalty - (I on't know why they aren't doing it in the first place, runaway corps..should have been stopped at the first indication IMHO)..

I'm coming around to Bernie..but it is hard...simply because we cannot afford to lose! The likes of any one of those clowns in the WH scares the effin' bejesus out of me...

who provided background on Bernie and said his emphasis on economics, income inequality and jobs and education were so important since many Hispanics lost homes and wealth from the mortgage/housing 2008 Financial Crisis. He spoke to Hispanic issues, historical racism in the US and concluded with matters that impact all. It was terrific to see the diverse crowd applaud and cheer. Si se puede!
