Vermont boasts many presidential connections

If elected, Sen. Bernie Sanders would become the third president tied to Vermont. Two presidents are listed as being born in Vermont, but both had left the state and were elevated to president without running.

Chester A. Arthur, the 21st president (1881-85), succeeded James Garfield upon Garfield's assassination. Arthur's father had emigrated from Ireland. Chester Arthur is listed as being born in Fairfield — and his home is listed as a historic site — but the lack of documentation has caused some to question if he was born in Canada.

Vice President Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president (1923-29), was elevated to president following the sudden death of Warren G. Harding. Coolidge, who was elected on his own in 1924, had worked his way into the national scene through politics in Massachusetts.

"Vermont is a State I Love"

Vermont is a state I love. I could not look upon the peaks of Ascutney, Killington and Mansfield without being moved in a way that no other scene could move me. It was here that I first saw the light of day, here that I received my bride. Here my dead lie buried, pillowed among the everlasting hills. I love Vermont because of her hills and valleys, her scenery and invigorating climate, but most of all, I love her because of her indomitable people. They are a race of pioneers who almost impoverished themselves for love of others. If ever the spirit of liberty should vanish from the rest of the Union, it could be restored by the generous share held by the people in this brave little State of Vermont.

not presidential but can't forget Thaddeus Stevens... born in Danville, VT (my home) in 1792
