They usually wait until after the primaries, as they don't want to risk backing the wrong horse.
I have seen exceptions in the past if there is a particular candidate head and shoulders above the others, but it would still need to be someone who is polling very well.
Note: Not in an union,so no first hand knowledge, just going by what I have seen before.
