Career
Rehm began her radio career in 1973[4] as a volunteer for WAMU's The Home Show. In 1979, she took over as the host of WAMU's morning talk show, Kaleidoscope, which was renamed The Diane Rehm Show in 1984.
Rehm has interviewed many political and cultural figures, including John McCain, Barack Obama, Madeleine Albright, and others. She has said that her most touching interview was with Fred Rogers of the PBS program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, conducted just before his death.[4] Rehm considers her interviews with Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton to have been "amazing experiences."[5]

(15,181 posts)The person she was 10 or 20 years ago.
I've listened to her telling heads-of-state to be quiet and answer the questions that she posed.
Perhaps the frequent botox injections she's had for her vocal cord issues have caused some other problems.
Of course, WAMU has been beset by partisan politics from the beltway crowd, as has NPR and PBS. After living so close to that DC bubble, even a level-headed person like Diane can lose her way. Sorry to see her go.
Anyone else remember what they did to Bob Edwards?

(6,133 posts)I stopped listening but every once in awhile I will hear a comment from a once brave reporter that makes me cringe. They want to keeps their jobs at the expense of obvious truth.
Diane did great Friday shows though the early to mid 2000s. Terry Gross has always been great. I have listened to her starting in the 80s.
Public radio and TV use to be great. I remember the battles in the Gingrich congress to bring it down. It didn't matter how rational the arguments from witnesses were, the thing was that the republican house was going to bring it down.

The Koch brothers spending a billion on this election and now the NPR and the DLC have been bought up all adds up to a tidy sum of "bought and paid for!"
People need to move off of NPR to other radio sources that put on shows like Democracy Now instead if they haven't already.

Should expose them every time they show up and keep the conversation on what they want least, the ISSUES.

(399 posts)Mara Liason is one of the smarmiest over there. I can't listen to any of the news related NPR flagship shows anymore, they play way too stupid and do the he-said she-said game with republicans and smear anyone or thing even vaguely liberal.

From now on, I listen to NPR for TED Talks, PHC reruns, and the occasional game show (excluding Ask Me Another, a relatively recent arrival which, IMHO, is lame as all get-out).
I'll stick with DU henceforth for pointers to news on Sanders.

(15,181 posts)Unlike the pundits on NPR. When this all started in the 70s(?) the staff was being paid 20-30K per year (my guess.) Now I'm believing that the "stars" get 80K+ but the reporting has not improved.

(12,471 posts)Yes, they changed their name. NPR, formerly National PUBLIC Radio, has become National PETROLEUM Radio, with funding from fracking companies, the Koch Brothers, and Exxon-Mobil. Listen to the breaks between the shows, and you will know that I tell no lies!

(45,251 posts)Another example of how right wing money builds right wing bias into a PBS show:
Washington Week in Review was first broadcast on 23 February 1967 on National Educational Television, making it the longest running show of its type on PBS. Since 1970, Washington Week has used a panel discussion format, moderated by a host. Gwen Ifill has been the host since Ken Bode was fired in 1999.[1] Ifill shortened the name when she took over, as a sign that "the show would spend more time looking forward".[2] In 2006, Washington Week made an agreement with National Journal which ensures that at least one National Journal reporter is on the show.[3]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Week
I stopped donating to PBS after Bill Moyers Journal had to scramble for money.

Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I'm more inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to someone posting several positive items in support of Bernie than to someone who can't spell "sow" correctly.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(45,984 posts)Say the name "Mara Liasson" and all I think is "Bush shill" for the way she dismissed all criticism of Bush and the way he "eon" the presidency during the run up to the Iraq war. She was Fox News on NPR. I have never forgiven her for that.
For those who didn't listen to it, don't. She didn't once mention Senator Sanders by name and even said that Biden's candidacy would be good for the paety because "rank-and-file Democrats don't want a coronation" and "right now, Hillary Clinton is basically running against herself."
Mara Liasson isn't even being dismissive. She's pretending, as she always has, that anti-establishmentarianism simply does not exist.
