(22,271 posts)but isn't that a large crowd for an Iowa gathering? I always picture Iowa gatherings as like 20 to 200 people. That crowd is amazing!

(24,411 posts)There are 1,200 students who attend Coe College, and 1,000 people were there. Obviously, many non-students attended but that is a decent number, especially considering that the event was on a small college campus.
Sanders has amassed large crowds in Iowa. I know that he's had a few speeches that attracted a few thousands people.
In July, 2,500 were at his speech in Sioux City, Iowa--which is a horrendously conservative part of the state. It's Steve King's district!
At the Iowa State Fair, last month, Sanders attracted very large crowds. Here's a great article (with video). http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/bernie-sanders-crowd-presence-strong-state-fair-town-hall-n410541
Interesting to note that Bernie stood on the "soapbox"--which is a tradition for politicians who attend the Iowa State Fair. They step up on the soapbox and give speeches. Nearly all primary candidates, Democrats and Republicans, do this. Sander's crowd was the largest of all of the candidates at the fair. Hillary never made it up there, but instead chose to just walk around the fair.
The Iowa caucuses happen in January. Things will begin heating up as January draws near. More political events and species will happen and there will be large crowds. During the last 08 caucuses, I attended many events for Obama in which 10,000+ people attended.
We take our caucuses very seriously, and so many Iowans attend multiple political events to hear what these candidates have to say. It's really crazy living here during the run-up to the caucuses. Rest assured---big crowds here full of people who are humbled and proud to vote first in the nation!
