On The Road:The Meskwaki Tribal Center
The sounds of tribal music and drums filled a school gymnasium on Friday when Sen. Bernie Sanders brought his presidential campaign to the Meskwaki settlement west of Tama, Iowa.
Some 400 people turned out to hear the U.S. senator from Vermont make the case for standing up for the disappearing American middle class.
He also outlined ways to create jobs, raise wages and reverse the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality in the United States that is greater today than at any time since before the Great Depression.
On another critical issue, Sanders spoke about the bold actions needed to stop global warming and prevent a planetary catastrophe. Native Americans know that if you destroy nature you destroy life and that is what were doing globally now and that has got to change, Sanders said.
With his support growing in Iowa polls, Sanders became the first presidential candidate since Walter F. Mondale to address a community meeting at the Native American settlement in central Iowa.
