Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumWe can't let Bernie play the role of sheepdog. I don't believe he is, but it's been put out there.
We need to make him our candidate.
"Vermont senator and ostensible socialist Bernie Sanders is playing the sheepdog candidate for Hillary Clinton this year. Bernie's job is to warm up the crowd for Hillary, herding activist energies and the disaffected left back into the Democratic fold one more time. Bernie aims to tie up activist energies and resources till the summer of 2016 when the only remaining choice will be the usual lesser of two evils."

(32,489 posts)Not a corporatist like HRC. He is not rounding people up for her. People are for him because we are fed up with politicians who refuse to support people and force corporations and banks to obey the law and to stop buying congress.

I see no evidence that he is involved in a conspiracy to elect Hillary Clinton.

(9,086 posts)I sympathize with some of what this article says.
So that's just one more reason to work our asses off to actually win. I respect Bruce Dixon but I just disagree with him on this. So let's prove him wrong.

(1,979 posts)It is conjecture to assume those that do or don't call themselves Democrats but support Sanders will vote for Clinton. Those I know will NOT, under almost any circumstance vote for Clinton, but they may vote for Sanders.
Perhaps if those that make this argument stated something like this: "Disaffected Democrats, Democrats that support Sanders, will be brought back into the fold and may finally be convince to vote for Clinton after all is said and done." Progressives that are NOT Democrats but support Sanders are unlikely to support Clinton is she wins the nomination." PTxS

(51,907 posts)They are concerned about this. What I recommended was thinking through a participation strategy in advance. In WA State, you must participate in the caucus system to get delegates for Sanders. This leads to several participation options.
Possible levels of participation:
Fill out and collect as many proxy forms endorsing Bernie as possible to turn into LD organizations (Info could also be part of a separate progressive database, but specific permission for that should be obtained.) This does not require actual caucus attendance or going to party meetings.
Join your local Dem LD organization to advocate for Bernie at meetings, and also to work for the endorsement of the most progressive city council candidates. Your predetermined quitting time could be after the precinct caucus, after the LD caucus, etc. Note that if the progressive candidate doesnt get the endorsement, nothing prevents you from using your walk list to pass out your candidates literature and or/advocating for Bernie.
If your precinct slot is empty, become an appointed PCO. This entitles you to a PCO account on VoteBuilder. Again, think of your exit strategy in advance.
I also designed a signup form with after the campaign in mind
Sanders is a long shot for winning the nomination, though he stands a good chance of winning Washington State due to the caucus system. But supposing he does not win, what next? He is absolutely not going to continue to run as an independent. Many Sanders supporters will never support Hillary Clinton, but where will they go? There are a couple of options.
_____ I want to be partly inside and partly outside the Democratic Party. Please forward my information to Progressive Democrats of America and Democratic Socialists of America
______ I want nothing to do with Democrats. Please connect me to Socialist Alternative and/or other left/progressive parties in Washington State
_______ I already get too many phone calls and emails. Please let me just caucus for Bernie Sanders and let it go at that.
