Thousands of enthusiastic Bernie Sanders supporters turned out at a rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Sunday hours after a new poll for CBS News showed the senator cementing his front-runner status in New Hampshire, growing to a solid 10-point lead in Iowa and gaining ground in South Carolina.
You look great from here. What a great turnout, Sanders told the 9,100 people in the audience, according to a crowd count by the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.
The huge turnout was another sign of the growing grassroots energy that has excited crowds across the country.
The energy behind Sanders also is reflected in public opinions surveys that put him in front in the states that will hold the first caucus and primary elections in the 2016 contest for the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
In New Hampshire, Sanders drew 52 percent of the Democrats to Clintons 30 percent. In Iowa, Sanders led Hillary Clinton 43 percent to 33 percent. Clinton was ahead in South Carolina.
There was one key finding tucked into the poll results fine-print.
One major difference right now is enthusiasm: Sanders is generating it and Clinton is not. Seventy-eight percent of Sanders voters in New Hampshire, and 63 percent of his voters in Iowa, say they enthusiastically support him, while just 39 percent of Clintons backers in New Hampshire and 49 percent in Iowa say they enthusiastically support her, CBS reported
