Bernie Sanders 'Disappointed' By Trans-Pacific Partnership Deal
"Wall Street and other big corporations have won again."
U.S. Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said he was disappointed by the Trans-Pacific Partnership Pacific trade deal reached on Monday, saying the pact would cost U.S. jobs and hurt consumers.
"Wall Street and other big corporations have won again," the U.S. senator from Vermont said in a statement, vowing to "do all that I can to defeat this agreement" in Congress.

Wall Street and other big corporations have won again, Sanders said.
It is time for the rest of us to stop letting multi-national corporations rig the system to pad their profits at our expense.
Sanders says the agreement follows other trade deals with Mexico, China and other low-wage countries that have cost millions of jobs and shuttered tens of thousands of factories across the United States.
In the Senate, I will do all that I can to defeat this agreement, he said.
We need trade policies that benefit American workers and consumers, not just the CEOs of large multi-national corporations.

(17,796 posts)There's strong resistance to this 'trade' deal in many of the participating countries, even if 'approved' we will find a way to break it.

(14,255 posts)I am cursed with a completely logical, get-to-the-bottom-line outlook on life. I was a good QA engineer. I consider all possibilities.
On the other hand, my ultimate bliss would be one of those glass-floored villas in Bora-Bora, with ultra high speed internet, TWO big monitors (screens, not lizards), and some sort of arrangement made for a steady supply of fantastic low-carb food. And wine. And I am not humorless in the least!

(11,945 posts)Djean, you're better than brave; you're adventurous! (Wonder if Bernie is adventurous?) I checked out glass-floored villas in Bora-Bora and got a vicarious spell of vertigo just gazing at them. Yes, they are extremely pretty with the turquoise water underneath, but I think it would take a very bright, free spirit to want to spend time in one.
I've come to think of bliss as an internal state elicited in moments of beauty, harmony, and connection (music, poetry, nature, contemplation, etc.) but the idea of looking around for blissful places to visit seems like an intriguing (and adventurous) way to put together a vacation trip. Thanks for the idea! Sorta sounds like you could be an ESTJ, or maybe ISTJ, on the Myers Briggs. Just a guess based on very little information.

(11,197 posts)More of what we don't want or need and less of what we do need. The TTP will allow corporations and foreign investors (but not unions and others) to challenge national laws that protect the public interest and the sovereignty of countries. Just one example, Philip Morris is using the TTP framework to sue Uruguay to stop new anti-smoking regulations to improve public health. (20 posts)I think at this point the positions of the different candidates with respect to the TPP are:
Sanders: Opposed
Hillary: Support (even though she tries not to say so by giving straight answers)
Biden: Support (as part of the current Administration it is difficult to conclude otherwise)
Trump: Opposed
Carson: Support (could be wrong, is there any statement from him saying otherwise?)
Bush, Rubio, Cruz: Support

the same sorta pressure Hillary is setting herself up for. We fell for "hope and change" . The change is gonna be evident once TPP is in place. The only "hope" I see is that Bernie manages to pull along enough dem legislators to end the tyranny of this miserable eight years. And, no I didn't mis-type. It's not six years - it's eight. There was the two years this administration SQUANDERED while they tried to erect a facade of nicey-nice with their opposition.
The final, fecal, in-your-face "accomplishment" is going to be this trade sellout. With SO MUCH corporate candy to be harvested, I doubt it can be side-tracked. In fact, it's probably one of - if not THE main - reason Boehner's sticking around for a few more weeks. So he can go out on an achievement as a feather in his cap.
We don't have representation. All we have are Special Interests dream teams we can cheer for as entertainment.

(11,945 posts)If the people are aware of this and have any sense at all, they will support Bernie.
There are many bad things about TPP, but the one that most gives me the creeps is the provision that corporations can sue governments for loss of profits. NAFTA has a similar provision, and what it effectively does is render democratically elected governments unable to represent and defend their own people. It is an attack on the notion of sovereignty and places corporations over governments. That should not be allowed. Absolutely should not be. It is a naked power grab. The proliferation of treaties like this one are advancing the corporate domination of the world.
Very serious stuff.

(24,683 posts)this is totally outrageous, it's like, and it's already been proven, they just don't care-----------------------
And in the house they are going to give what, 2 minute speeches, I really don't know, but this will show just how mush these hypocrites think of us, 2 whole minutes or more of outrageous BS after the ninety day review.
over 60 % of the people don't and didn't like this "deal" anywhere, Canada, Australia, US for example.
It's like know one listened--------------and they didn't--------------except to get paid off with more bribe money
This "deal" started under Bush and finished with the current administration is just amazing, I feel that I have been at a snooker table,
Now what do you call this country Novocaine, or how about Citigroup U.S.

(17,301 posts)For the simple reason that ONLY corporations are allowed to bring suit under these type of agreements. NAFTA, and other corporate tools of control, give corporations an extra special court to bludgeon citizens with. No one else aside from a nation or corporation is allowed to use these agreements to get their complaints heard. Everyone else has to first convince a president, congress or other political person to bring their complaint to court. Why are corporations afforded yet another avenue to abuse citizens? It's not as if corporations and the rich who own them, are suffering or are unsuccessful.
