Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumHow do I explain about Bernie's free college program?
My younger daughter and husband are military, lean to the right but mostly moderate republican light, but don't dislike Bernie.
My daughter was asking me how it would be paid for even if we lifted SS cap. She is right we would need a ton more colleges, classes and teachers if everyone went.
I was saying if we got everyone working with fixing infrastructure the type of people who put 100% of earnings back into the economy and paying taxes that should help.
But it feels overwhelming to explain such a big undertaking and that is just schools not all the other things he wants to do. I realized after signing up to volunteer at debate party last week, if i am going to go door to door or phone I need to sound more sure of the plans.

(20,453 posts)I believe the minutia on the numbers of persons following this higher (public) education track isn't written in stone, but it is not far off. Regardless, I don't have this in my head. But, in discussing this and what the general budget numbers are going to be available, college tracks are going to be there. And, they will be based on percentages of college bound high school grads and the tuition set in those public universities. Nothing happens all at once, mind you.
I also don't believe we would need a ton more colleges; however, we would need to also budget the percentages of jobs that require vocational and technical or certificate (either lower division college such as community colleges. Most of all, I believe vocational education would receive a much higher proportion of high school graduates because of the technical and vocational jobs to enter the trades associated with building our infrastructure.
I will follow the conversation and share as I know more, marlakay.

(506 posts)"SANDERS: But in terms of education, this is what I think. This is the year 2015. A college degree today, Dana, is the equivalent of what a high school degree was 50 years ago.
And what we said 50 years ago and a hundred years ago is that every kid in this country should be able to get a high school education regardless of the income of their family. I think we have to say that is true for everybody going to college.
I think we don't need a complicated system, which the secretary is talking about, the income goes down, the income goes down, if you're poor you have to work, and so forth and so on.
I pay for my program, by the way, through a tax on Wall Street speculation, which will not only make public colleges and universities tuition-free, it will substantially lower interest rates on college debt, a major crisis in this country."

(592 posts)is a beautiful thing for all of us who were hit hard by it in 2008. Bernie's line in Tucson, "The American middle class bailed out Wall Street in 2009, now it's time for Wall Street to bail out the American middle class."
There are many families that lost a great deal of savings just trying to stay afloat through 08 to 12, including my own. I have a son in his first year of college and a daughter who just entered High School this year. IF my kids college tuition were paid for, I can retire with something. His scholarships will help him pay for room and board, not just tuition.
My kids are both Honors students and if they weren't, I can't even imagine how we would get them through college. Even with THAT, I feel like the rest of my life is JUST to get them across the finish line to a better future. I shouldn't have to feel lucky just to be able to do that, but I do.
How the hell do parents do it for kids without scholarships?
Wall Streets speculation crushed my 401K and ruined valuations on my home. Myself and many more are in exactly the same boat, regardless of Party persuasion and so many more can't afford to send their kids to college much less retire.
Bernie Sanders could be a green alien squirrel and I would vote for him just on this policy alone.

(3,894 posts)Specifically, Sanders is sponsoring Senate legislation to introduce a nominal financial transactions tax on speculative trading in stocks, bonds, derivatives, and other financial instruments. Parallel to the Inclusive Prosperity Act, a measure sponsored by Congressman Keith Ellison, D-Minnesota, the Sanders proposal would bring the United States up to speed with the dozens of other nations that have recognized the wisdom of establishing financial transactions taxes.
