ON THE ROAD: In the Public Interest (speech video and pics)
Iowa Democrats on Saturday gave Bernie Sanders a rousing reception at a Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in Des Moines.
With only 100 days to go before the Iowa caucuses begin the process of picking a Democratic Party presidential nominee, Sanders recited his own long and consistent history of standing up for working families and fighting for civil rights. He talked about his record of opposing job-killing trade deals and supporting bold action to stop global warming.
“I promise you tonight as your president I will govern based on principle not poll numbers. I pledge to you that every day I will fight for the public interest not the corporate interests. I will not abandon any segment of American society – whether you’re gay or black or Latino or poor or working class – just because it is politically expedient at a given time,” Sanders said.
At a big rally before the dinner, Sanders fired up 2,000 supporters who marched with him over a bridge across the Des Moines River to the hall where the dinner was staged. “This country belongs to all of us, not just wealthy campaign donors,” Sanders told the rally before the march.
