Sanders Announces Support for Same-Sex Marriage, Opposes ‘Homophobic’ Legislation

http://www.nationofchange.org/2015/10/27/sanders-announces-stance-on-same-sex-marriage-opposes-homophobic-legislation/

The Vermont Senator, who has favored same-sex marriage throughout the years, supported Vermont’s civil unions law in 2000 and also helped pass the state’s same-sex marriage legalization law in 2009, according to the website www.senate.gov.

After citing his support for gay rights during his CNN interview, Sanders challenged Hillary Clinton’s defense of DOMA.

Clinton, who has yet to take a stand on the issue, said that her reason for backing the law, which her husband Bill Clinton signed into law during his presidency, was because it was a defensive measure to protect gay rights.

But Sanders responded to Clinton’s statement confirming DOMA was anti-gay legislation that played off of the “fears of Americans” and was merely a political expedient.

The one thing Sanders did agree with Clinton on was that the “culture has changed radically” and that we should be proud of how far we have come on this issue as a country.
