Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumPPP Poll - Sanders 24%
Well here is a some good news. The last poll circulated on DU, Bernie was at 13% (please correct me if I'm wrong)
But in this recent poll from Public Policy Polling
Clinton 57%
Sanders 24%
O'Malley 4%
Webb 2%
Chafee 1%
http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2015/05/clinton-up-big-in-washington.html
So, even though the article is titled, "Clinton up big in Washington" we can see that Bernie is gaining votes from non-Clinton candidates and Clinton herself. That lead is not inevitable and could continue to erode as it did in 2008. Get the word out and watch that number continue to grow.

A couple of presidential debates and it would be all over. Simple as that.
This would not have been the case at any point during the last 20 years of American politics. It very much is now.

It would be funny if this election were so damned serious. If we get another corporatist Third Way Dem in the White House at best or a Republican at worse, we are truly and seriously fucked.
BrotherIvan
(9,126 posts)There is an assumption that all AA votes will automatically go for Hillary. Why? I don't know. I don't know what she has promised to do for civil rights specifically. I know she is making promises on immigration and has talked about incarceration, but I don't know what proposals will make anyone's lives better. I don't see that civil rights improved under Obama either. In fact, he has been the opposite of good by calling African Americans thugs and saying we need to respect the cops. So, I'm not sure what another corporatist will do. I'm surprised anyone is thinking she will actually follow through on her populism. It's all campaign rhetoric.
But yes, when you try to state facts or information to certain posters, they feel cornered and will lash out. I've seen what has been said to you in threads and that's very wrong. The poster who tried to paint you as a bigot is doing her damnedest to take over every discussion. (3,247 posts)I voted for Obama in the primary that year, but had always liked the Clintons until getting a taste of their manipulation of racist sentiments in certain states. As an old southern white male, I could hear the damn dog whistle and no one can tell me it was imaginary. OTOH as a person with black family members and some remote mixed ancestry, I was very offended by it. The point of dog whistle tactics is to be inaudible to everyone other than the target audience, and thus not to offend anybody while winking and nudging.
This issue may relate to HRC not having as solid a hold on black voters as Obama, not by a long shot. Time will tell.

I may only be a disabled white liberal but some of us do care about justice for all. Here In missouri ferguson aftermath has really made me see dems In Mo as useless. They are more intrested in protecting police nomatter what than having justice for people who
actully come out and vote for them.no dem can get elected statewide without heavy turnout In Kansas city and St Louis.
The problem with execution of young black men isn't just racism. It's also how police have been militazed.and the culture of police protecting their own.In St louis the country prosecutor cared more about protecting police than justice.

(9,748 posts)And it wasn't just dog whistling. Don't forget voter suppression in Nevada. I wouldn't think too many African-Americans would vote for someone who tried suppressing the Black vote in 2008.
I do know one AA DUer doesn't care. Obama campaign wrote a memo before the racist attacks began saying they would use that against her should her campaign make any racist attacks. In that one AA DUers mind, the fact they were planning to accuse her of racism before the racist attacks means the accusation of racism is not true.
Voter suppression, Rev. Wright, "White working Americans", and on and on and on are ...? I dunno. But apparently not racist to that DUer.

(32,324 posts)becomes clear that a full forty percent or more view Sanders favorably, then two things are bound to happen:
One) Hillary Clinton will lie through her teeth and say exactly what Sanders is saying.
Two) The Corporate-run media will start to tell lies about Bernie. For instance, rather than reporting on a respected poll like the Gallup poll saying his standing is at 40%, they will make up their own polls that might show how men his height have never been elected; or that Americans will not vote for such an old codger.
And when they are not lying about Bernie, they will be ignoring him. Totally! He could save an infant from a burning skyscraper, by scaling forty floors with his bare hands, and they won't report the story.

A major surprise may be on the way because, first, the media have Bernie on the Big Ignore, second, because the Mainstream media types are cognitively incestuous elitists who build their opinions by interviewing each other, and third, because people are watching less mainstream crap every day in favor of social media & maybe even personal communication.
The thing that the mainstreamers are missing is that there is a massive wave of anger, a bitter sense of betrayal, even a rising sense of desperation abroad in the general public. The media are seemingly sensing none of this. Everyone assumes that things will go on as usual, that a media blitz can overcome anything.
They are wrong.

(45,274 posts)I tend to rely on random encounters with people. I'm the type who talks a lot to store clerks, etc. when I'm out & about. I start out by maybe asking questions about their merchandise that implies that I respect their opinion; not just "Where are the oranges," but "Have you tried any of these oranges? What do you think?"
For some reason, people seem to like to tell me things, all sorts of things. I often steer them onto politics and just draw them out, never try to assert my own stuff. If they're committed wingnuts or fundamentalists, it becomes obvious pretty soon, & I move on to other topics & disengage. However, if they start showing their malaise (to borrow Jimmy Carter's word), I might ask them if they've heard anything about this Bernie guy.
I'm going to start carrying along Bernie's 12 Steps. (That, BTW, is a great entree when you run across someone in a recovery program. "Hey, here's another 12-step program. What do you think of these?"
This is what works for me. Everybody needs to work out their own style.
But imagine this: Suppose you manage to really turn on 1 person a week, and each of them goes on to turn on others at the same rate. Starting with Bernie's 100,000 known supporters, at the end of 1 week, we would number 200,000, and so on, in a geometric progression. It would take something like 11 weeks to have 100 million recruits.
Now, obviously, it's not going to play out exactly like that, but sometimes it helps to have that kind or arithmetic in mind when we contemplate our actions. It's not all futile. There is a path toward the world we want. It can be made to work.

We also have to try to be receptive towards people currently backing Hillary. People are going to start realizing there are other candidates and we don't want to alienate any Hillary people that decide she isn't progressive enough or seems too close to the big banks.
The Hillary supporters here have told us again that they are outnumbered here as part of their "DU is not the real world" meme. Well if that is the case then all we need to do is stop paying attention to the most ascerbic of her supporters and those posts will fade right down the list.

(12,471 posts)If she slips this much in such a short time, she is toast.
At this rate, by the time the primaries come around, Mrs. Clinton will be down to negative numbers!
BrotherIvan
(9,126 posts)The idea that she is the inevitable, unbeatable candidate who should run unopposed is the same thing they tried in 2008. And as her lead was eaten at by Obama, the narrative for his is that he had momentum while she was losing. That's a bad position to be in. Every one of her moves were seen as just trying to hold on. Why anyone thinks that can't happen again, I don't know.
The best news is that the media has already made the expectations for Bernie so low, he has nowhere to go but up. Every poll, every announcement will be cause to celebrate. It will energize his supporters and make him seem fresh and exciting. If Hill's supporters are anything in real life like they are on DU, they will be chasing people away in droves. A lot of her early polls with big leads are people saying they will vote Democratic, and she was the presumed nominee. As that changes and more people hear about Bernie, the polls will shift, count on it.
I am not one who is so confident in his chance. The money is a big deal and he will be outspent 1000-1. And obviously there is a lot of identity politics at work as well.
RoccoR5955
(12,471 posts)Wasn't it just a few weeks ago when Mrs. Clinton had a fifty point lead? It is now down to much less than that.
Oh and Bernie does not need the money. For one, most of that money is spent on TV ads, and not as many folks watch TV any more. Second, Bernie has WE THE PEOPLE. Real flesh and blood volunteers who will talk to people one on one for free!
This is what shall win him the nomination, and lead to a landslide like we have never before seen in the US.
BrotherIvan
(9,126 posts)We need a change in this country. I can see on DU and other places on the net where older folks are so ingrained, they believe that neoliberalism is *synonymous* with reality. I am always shocked to read it. I agree that people who get their info from TV tend to be the most uninformed yet the most strongly convinced that they aren't (one would think it would be the opposite). So I do hope that Bernie's popularity on the net is taking hold and leads to a revolution in thought for the American people. Young people NEED to get out there and vote for their futures. This is their last chance.
