Bernie Sanders is so hot right now

By Chris Cillizza

Do you feel the Bernie-mentum?

Yes, of course, I am talking about the presidential candidacy of Vermont independent/socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, which he made official this week on the shores of Lake Champlain.

And, no, I am not being entirely tongue-in-cheek. The truth of the matter is that Sanders has rather quickly emerged as the leading rival -- and liberal alternative -- to the juggernaut candidacy of former secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

Witness new polling this week from Quinnipiac University on the Democratic field; Clinton leads the way with 57 percent followed by Sanders at 15, Joe Biden at 9 and Martin O'Malley, Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee all at 1 percent. Sanders's growth from the last poll is even more eye-opening; he was at only 8 percent in an April Q poll and at just 4 percent in a March one.

Fifteen percent, of course, is still 42 points behind Clinton. Which means that Sanders remains a non-threat to seriously challenge the frontrunner for the nomination at this point. What Sanders has proven over the last month or so, however, is that O'Malley, Webb and Chafee will all have to go through him if they want to be the alternative -- liberal or otherwise -- to Clinton in the race. That status is a genuine accomplishment for Sanders and his campaign team.

Chris, you might want to go to the Sanders store and see if you can get a x-large t-shirt, I tried
and I think that there are many more like me.

That's a pretty good indication that those Union workers making those t-shirts have someone that has there back and his back for starters and guess what he's is going to use the Union drivers to deliver the package for starters , like maybe the postal system------------that's a pretty good poll.

And if I was a Clinton supporter right now------those t-shirt sales for his political contributions are more important than getting money from a corporate oligarchy-----------this is basic grassroots-----------from the Union worker to the society at large-----------that's the poll.

I just love how the Washington belt way media still tries to marginalize this man------------its not about the polls this time around --------what was the questioned asked in those polls--------that's the question

There will be a tipping point once Hillary goes below 50% at that point all alternative candidates numbers will swell as people realize (again) she is not inevitable.

The key will be to assure that Bernie is the most prominent candidate at that point.

steadily, for several months right now.

Also, these polls are not paying attention to where most of Bernie's support will be coming from, the Independent Vote, huge now as people flee both major parties, AND the non voters.

But to get 15% of the Dem base right now, is awesome also.

And the more he becomes known, the more excited people are about him.

Jan eg, in the same poll, Bernie was only 3% among Dems

She was up to 13% last year and now they are not polling for her. I don't think the Biden people will switch to Bernie though as I guess they are just holding out. But there is a good I Don't Know section to choose from. There's hope yet. The biggest thing I have seen around the net and DU is the "I agree with Bernie but he can't win" meme. If he shows he can, he will build momentum. The die hard Hillboosters will never change and won't again this time around.
