Buttigieg responds to protesters yelling anti-gay messages in Dallas

Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg was interrupted several times by hecklers shouting anti-gay messages during a speech Friday evening in Dallas.

The South Bend, Ind., mayor, who is gay, was speaking at the Dallas County Democratic Party's Johnson Jordan Dinner when he was interrupted several times by protesters, at least some of whom appeared to yell anti-gay messages, according to The Texas Tribune.
"Marriage is between a man and a woman," one shouted. "Repent," another yelled, according to a video posted to Twitter by CNN reporter DJ Judd.

Buttigieg reportedly carried on through the interruption, noting that he served in Afghanistan "to defend that man’s freedom of speech." Buttigieg at one point deadpanned that it was a "lively room" and later added that he was "just thinking of that scripture that says bless and do not curse".

He has faced public and personal attacks for his sexuality on the campaign trail, including an incident last month in which he was confronted by two protesters in Iowa shouting biblical references. "The good news is the condition of my soul is in the hands of God ..." Buttigieg responded.

1. I am really proud of Pete

He probably won't be our nominee, in fact, he probably won't be selected as VP either but he is doing ground breaking work in his run now. He's proud of who he is and he is here to try and make life better for his fellow Americans.

I am so proud that we democratic voters have embraced him and recognize his abilities.

The man is a Rhode Scholar and a gentleman.

I would not be surprised at all if Pete became our nominee himself sometime during his political career.

I am very impressed with Pete and it makes me sad to think we can't nominate him due to the homophobia in this country today. But he is laying the groundwork for the day when it won't be an issue. And he is young enough that he might eventually be the person to break through.

9. I don't disagree with you, but I am supporting Pete

I'm supporting him because I really do like his message.

For many, many people, particularly younger Americans, whether or not Buttigieg is gay is the bit 'who cares?' It really is - Millennials are the most diverse generation America has ever produced.

That said, there are still a lot of haters, and this fundy Christian brand of hate is especially corrosive to everything this nation should stand for. Whenever I see something like this, I often quip, "Ah, the forces of Christian hate..."

I've been called on the carpet by some one here for that, so I will say that each person's religion is their own, and absolutely must be respected...as long as they don't try and foist off their beliefs on me.

Pete's got real guts, and he clearly loves this country and wants to make things better for us. I am a policy wonk and I am encouraged by some of the things he's said, though it is early days. I like Warren a lot too! Totally. She really gets it.

2. Pete never would have received their votes anyway. Neither will any other Democratic candidate.

This type of attack often mobilizes supporters. His response is crucial and my guess is he is well prepared.

3. These loudmouths are not representative of the Texan integrity I was raised with in Dallas.

A refined, genteel and soft spoken strength of character, the ability to sever brashness with understated, sharp wit.
Those were the Christian values I was taught by my Texan upbringing.
These are qualities that have served me well everywhere.

For decades Dallas has been a beacon for LGBT people; those from the Deep South in particular.

These nasty displays can and do happen anywhere, but Dallas is a city of tolerance to LGBTs and I'm sure Mayor Pete knows this.

You put in a good word for Dallas, I thought I'd put in my $0.02 worth as well.

However, I have to say that I certainly do not endorse this kind of behavior.

Live by the Golden Rule "Do unto others..." and you'll be a decent person.

Or maybe Pete should have called for their forceful removal as has been done
by a different candidate. LOL

It worked for Trump.

I'm so tired of the Trumper mentality.

Even if someone doesn't approve, or thinks it's sinful, it's legal now, so that's that. It's horrible to yell insults at people.

....this kind of small minded thinking comes from a small bunch of loud mouthed jerks who infiltrated the Democratic rally with Mayor Pete.....in these instances, I am reminded of the Commandment that Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ said, and that is....."Love as I have Loved You".......and that means.......EVERYONE !!!
