Biden Thinks Trump Is the Problem, Not All Republicans. Other Democrats Disagree.

Bolded text is the GOP 2020 Presidential Election argument. Our candidate needs an alternative message that stands up, tall and proud with a Democratic vision for moving forward. imo

The New York Times

Biden Thinks Trump Is the Problem, Not All Republicans. Other Democrats Disagree.

Shane Goldmacher 5/4/19

Early polls show why Mr. Biden would want to elide any disagreements. Only 23 percent of Democrats said he had the “best policy ideas” in a recent poll by Quinnipiac University. But 56 percent of Democrats said he had the best chance of defeating Mr. Trump.

Some Democrats say the idea of trying to predict electability and casting Mr. Trump as an “aberration” was tried by Mrs. Clinton in 2016 — and it failed.

“I feel like the party went through this and the 2016 election showed that Trumpism isn’t just Donald Trump — it’s the entire Republican Congress, too,” said Rebecca Katz, a progressive Democratic strategist unaligned in the 2020 contest. “Until there is someone in the Republican Party who can stand up to Trump, then none of them are better than Trump.”

Republicans aligned with Mr. Trump say that, whatever the president’s failings, he has overseen a growing economy, the appointment of a vast array of conservative judges and a huge tax cut. They note that they offer dissent when they disagree with his policies; Mr. Trump recently suffered setbacks on his desired nominations to the Federal Reserve, for example, because of Republican opposition.

anti-trump sentiment that won the day for the Democratic Party. Just as in 2018, we must up our ground game and make sure we create enthusiasm that will get like minded voters to the polls.

The entire Republican leadership is the cause of our decline in civility. We must hold them accountable. Don't let them twist the issue so that it becomes Dems "hate rump and therefore they must hate all Republicans". imo

He has a message of unity as well. He doesn't attack Trump by name or his voters. What he does do is attack the behaviors that are disgusting and says WE need to change this. He makes it EVERYONE'S responsibility to change and fix it, no matter your party or where you are from because we ALL need to come together and fix these things.

There was a point made in one of my messages that a point in the campaign that hurt Hillary was her mentioning of the basket of deplorables. It dragged on her campaign. I think Biden's message of focusing on Trump, attacking Trump, but not going after his supporters, is a wise choice.

biggest failure too. The failure to see that there is not good in everyone, that some people are very good at presenting a great image but deep inside they are nothing but purely selfish people who will leave a trail of victims behind them. They enjoy watching others suffer and they will never have compassion or empathy for others. Mitch McConnell is the poster child for this kind of personality.

The idea that everyone has good in them is what keeps people who are abused in bad relationships. It’s too much hope. It’s wishful, comforting thinking

Blaming a constituency is a sure way to energize it against you.

I disagree, I suspect off the record so does he, but as a leading candidate applying to be the leader of the country, it is the correct position to take.

Remember “deplorables”.. totally accurate. Totally fitting. Totally justified. Totally became a rally cry for them in their attacks on her.

The conservative base has made him a semi-divine prophet. A little blasphemy from the family values crowd to go with hypocrisy.

Those who don't like him, still condone him and his actions because he is carrying out or trying to carry out the dogmatic conservative playbook. They aren't going to admit to disliking him.

Hillary went after Trump's supporters and it backfired - even if what she said was true. Democrats can't fall into that trap. Especially if some voters are on the fence about supporting Trump.

Indicting all republicans sounds reckless and we will turn off center and center-right independents, a lot of whom hold conservative positions but intensely hate Trump.

This election is going to be a war fought for every single vote and it is not intended to provide satisfaction to our inner feelings.

Biden is 100% correct in this. Lofty slogans and idealistic platitudes are good for candidates to who are sure they would lose but it helps them raise money from angry people.

By not demonizing the entire opposition, Biden also makes it easier for himself to unite the country after he wins.
