My chorus, and three others, performed a commissioned piece about the 50th anniversary of Stonewall
One of the movements is And I Walked. The piece starts at the day after Stonewall and carries though the Act Up protests of the 1980's and into the eventual victory of marriage equality. It is a beautiful piece, enough so that it is hard not to cry while performing it. Knowing that this week the cover of Time Magazine featured an openly gay Presidential candidate and his husband seems like fitting timing. I was 1 and a half when Stonewall happened. Growing up in the 70's and 80's the notion of marriage equality and gay politicians (much less presidential candidates) was like the plot of a crazy B movie not the stuff of history.
I can't wait to get my hands on the paper copy (I am assuming it is coming out Monday or Tuesday). I hold no illusions of seeing a Buttigieg administration but like Jackson in 84 and 88 he is being taken seriously as a candidate. I may not live to see an LGBT President, or I may. Mayor Pete's campaign will have helped make that day possible no matter when that day occurs.
In the meantime I will be walking.
