Florida takes shape as Joe Biden's firewall

The former vice president is crushing the Democratic field in the nation’s third-largest state.

By MARC CAPUTO 05/11/2019 06:49 AM EDT

MIAMI — Florida, with its hordes of older voters and establishment-oriented Democratic Party, doesn’t just look like Biden Country. Judging from the initial reaction to his presidential bid in the nation’s third-largest state, it’s shaping up to be his firewall.

Joe Biden is crushing the Democratic field here, including Bernie Sanders, in the latest polling. More than one-third of Democratic state legislators endorsed him almost as soon as he announced his candidacy, a testament to state political ties that stretch back decades and span generations.

“Biden is in a class all on his own in Florida,” said pollster Ryan Tyson, who just completed a survey of Florida Democrats.

In prior Democratic presidential primaries, Florida didn’t matter nearly as much to the outcome as it figures to next year. The crowded 2020 field increases the likelihood of a drawn-out primary season that remains unsettled when the state votes in mid-March.

can at best be described as courageous.

Gore, Kerry, Hillary, and Gillum know better. Huge 2018 clue wave and the sitting Dem Senator is defeated. It’s a black hole.

A firewall is about security. Given the state of FL’s voting machines, that’s a joke.

One day there’s a storm, the next there’s no beach in front of your million dollar condo.

I would say Florida is a backstop. But bet your house on their voting machines and you won’t have to wait for the sheriff to force the sale.

Tens of thousands of votes that were mailed in from a democratic heavy hitting part of the state got thrown out because they did not get postmarked due to the MAGAbomber, and both Gillum and Nelson just lost.

Florida has something like 11 days of early voting in all counties (blue counties have even more, around 14 days). Democratic voters need to start taking advantage of early voting, that includes two Saturdays and one Sunday.

We need to stop blaming everything on voter suppression and look at how our own decisions cause us to lose winnable races.

Hillary lost Florida by around 115,000 votes, eventhough her campaign was basically in around six of the 67 counties. Reducing Trump's margin by just around an average of 1900 votes in counties that were not campaigned in to any extent would have meant victory. It is unknown how many no votes took place because people unwisely wrote in, that is on top of the Stein votes.

In 2000, 97,000 voters chose Nader's siren call. If just 700 of those people had gotten off their fucking high horse and voted for Gore, history through today would have been changed.

I am tired of the dismissals from people that don't live the fuck in the state. Good democrats are fighting here in Florida, we just don't need the flighty birds like Nader and Stein coming in to pull away those that are weak minded enough to go for their shit. And we need people to stop the Florida Man and Florida Woman shit, this is a state of over 20 million people that has some of the most liberal open records laws in the country, screwball shit gets reported to the Press here that would not in other states.
