Cory Booker sees 'nothing honorable' in a nation that tolerates gun carnage in peacetime

In the 50 years that U.S. Sen. Cory Booker has been alive, he says, more people have died from gun violence in America than in all the wars America has fought, combined.

The New Jersey Democrat now seeking the presidential nomination calls that peacetime carnage a moral outrage. And in a telephone interview from South Carolina Saturday, he said he's tired of the corporate gun lobby being allowed to shape the terms of the debate about safety.

"I'm willing to take my case to Iowans and explain the absurdities we have in America, where the gun lobby has exempted itself from consumer product safety laws, has exempted itself from suits if their products are (deficient) and found ways to render the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) with very little teeth," he said. "It has found ways to stop even the spending of CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control) resources on researching gun violence as a public safety issue."

But will Iowa listen? Booker already had noted some of the "astounding" legislative bills blocking gun safety to have come out of our Statehouse. You remember: Allowing people to carry weapons into public buildings and forcing city halls and courthouses to accept them. Letting folks fire if they feel "reasonably" threatened. Removing any age restriction on children firing weapons under parental supervision. Not blocking loaded guns even from child-care centers or vehicles transporting children to and from them. Blocking public access to information on who has permits to carry.
