(10,870 posts)My theory - its their Preachers.
In the pews, they constantly hear the sermon about God knowing us all before he formed us.
The theory being that there is the thing called the SOUL and God places it into the fetus at the moment of conception of the fertilized egg.
I grew up in this culture.
And I was the precocious kind of kid that asked a lot of questions of my Sunday School teachers.
They all hated me because they didnt have answers to my questions other than to say to just live by faith and read the Bible.
Anyway, if you believe this theory, then you will believe that you have moral superiority for being a pious defender of babies. And, what is more precious than a baby.
At least, an unborn one anyway.
That is how these people think.
* It also explains why they wont give exceptions for rape or incest. They will say that its not the babies fault as to how it got here. They will say God makes no mistakes and that SOUL deserves the right to live just as any other does.
These forced Birchers have been waiting for their pounds of flesh by voting republican for many years.
With a 5-4 Supreme Court now, they think God will lead America back to righteousness.
They wont rest until their republican leaders find a way to overturn Roe.

(1,336 posts)Seems to me that if this religious belief is the basis for the anti-abortion movement, then that would be in direct conflict with the U.S. Constitution's separation of church and state.
I've heard die-hard Catholics aver that Catholic doctrine states that life begins at conception (not true, folks!) so there again, Catholics are trying to change the laws of the land to conform to their religious belief.
And I will NEVER to refer to the movement as Pro-Life. It is anything but.......

(10,870 posts)They will tell you that we are a Christian nation.
They will tell you that all bad things that have happened in America is because the country has turned its back on God.
(E.g. taking prayer out of public schools).
They want a Christian Taliban led by Christian Dominionists (like Pence) to set policy.

(1,336 posts)But you DO have a Constitution.
And isn't it past time that their wants be brought to light in major ways so that the majority knows? I never see any discussion about this movement, either on broadcast or cable, nor even in social media. Everyone seems so damn afraid of exposing them, for fear of being called religious persecutionists.

(7,479 posts)In the perfect RW world abortion would be banned for some and mandatory for others. It has nothing to do with choice. See Richard Spencer.

(13,390 posts)The sacred fetus was a deliberate scam. Prior to that shift, Baptist, Methodist and other clergy supported legal abortion because they had to soon bury women who had talked with them about their dilemma.
The conservatives who wanted to cut social programs that feed, house, and provide health care to poor families found their way in by exploiting the misogyny which drove the narrative that women who would have abortions are simply callous. Behind it all was a fear of white women who dared to not have enough children with white men.
White supremacy which had been conveniently rooted in the early religious right, abd an early manifestation of the eugenics movement was for families who were believed to have superior genetic make-up to make large contributions to their superior population. The women's movement and desegregation were simultaneous threats because white women having fewer children was complicated by increasing interracial relationships.
Policy initiatives which reduced spending on social programs exploited race. Thus, the "welfare mom" and her many children stereotype was intentionally not white, even though the majority of recipients have always necessarily been from the largest population.
The perceived threat of immigration has the same roots.
I'm not sure what it will take to satisfy their agenda but I don't think overturning Roe would be enough.

(2,113 posts)He even sent out an email asking his supporters to donate to Planned Parenthood.
The email said:
We won't back down when it comes to fully protecting Roe v. Wade, fighting dangerous efforts to roll back reproductive health care, and defending a womans right to access an abortion. We will fight these dangerous efforts with everything weve got in legislatures across the country, in the courts, and at the ballot box. We will win.
But its going to take all of us getting to work right away. If you can join us in stepping up at this moment, the groups that fight on the front lines of this battle need our help right now from national groups like Planned Parenthood to local groups in Alabama like the Yellowhammer Fund.
Can you make a donation today to Planned Parenthood and Alabamas Yellowhammer Fund? Your contributions will strengthen our fight to protect abortion care in Alabama and elsewhere at a time when it continues to be targeted by radical attacks.

(11,885 posts)And all women and men that back their women should be even more riled up to vote against trump and the gop. This will backfire badly for trump and the hate group formerly known as the gop. Many of their issues are driving republicans away, and will make this next election even worse for trump and the hate group that supports him in Congress.
