of Trump.

If all we do is try to remove Trump and fail we may find the Republicans taking full control of Congress again in 2020.

We can investigate Trump and work on other important issues at the same time and in my opinion it would be a good idea to do so.

(unfortunately still alive) canary in the mine who showed us how deadly an atmosphere the right has created.

Sure, there will be a ton of visceral enjoyment watching the destruction of the Trump Crime Family, especially the vile creature that squats atop it.

But let's make sure that Donnie is only the loudest vermin eliminated - the entire right must be targeted for neutralization if we are to avoid re-fighting this war again and again.

Donnie has given us the opportunity to deliver a hopefully fatal blow to the entire family of diseases called conservatism.
Let's not be satisfied with only chopping off the head of the beast - a total cure requires significant sacrifice that we must be willing to make.
The alternative is unacceptable.

. . . I am somewhat thankful that the "vile creature" is the one who exploited the populist potential within the Republican Party.

The elite fiscal conservatives leaders of the Republican Party have lead the social conservative hoi polloi by the noses by promising them to support their "they are not like us" agendas while instead consistently voting against the financial best interests of their constituents in order to line the pockets of their rich supporters. It was only a matter of time before some politician recognized that weakness of traditional GOP leadership and exploited it for his own ends.

Remember that Trump won because he not only appealed to the traditional Republican conservative base, but also to white blue collar workers in key states who feel threatened by globalism and immigration. Actually what makes Trump most dangerous as the leader of the free world and most powerful person on the planet, his character and his unstable personality, also makes him less dangerous as a candidate for reelection in 2020.

Consider for a moment that a charismatic Republican with a sterling character who has the ability to communicate with the common man might have been the first politician to recognize the weakness of tradition Republican leadership and used Trump's strategy to become the Republican nominee in 2016. He probably wouldn't have had the help to the Russians, but he might have been even better able to appeal to blue collar union workers that normally vote for Democrats.

What we wouldn't have now numerous investigations into every aspect of his life and and Trump's endless presidential blunders in both national and international affairs. If that kind of person would have used Trump's strategy to become president in 2016, he would be probably be much harder to beat in 2020.

turned into a caldron.

If off-his-meds Donnie still draws forty-whatever percent support, think of how much more of America would accept a "kinder/gentler" version doing exactly the same (policy) things.

The GOP is riding him as long as he gives them the policies they want.
A tamer horse would take them farther, more easily.

As bad as things are now, they could be worse.
And we could have no chance of stopping it. Thanks to Donnie, we do.

Can’t we have a Democratic primary without the canidates tearing each other apart with their supporters following their bad example? If a candidate can’t convince the electorate to vote for him/her based on his/her qualification without stooping to going negative, he/she isn’t worth voting for.

. . . we do seem to always fight among ourselves first - but that doesn't make it always any less stupid.

I remember when there were horrible fights on this board between Sanders and Clinton supporters. Those fights left many Sanders supporters unable to support Clinton in the general election with any enthusiasm. That's why "fighting first" is beyond stupid.

This shouldn't need reminding but it's clear it does. I try to hold myself to this standard when discussing our primary candidates and not engage in mud-flinging. Can be difficult as emotions run high but positive rhetoric towards our candidates will help remove Trump and GOP stranglehold choking all of us.

There will be primaries about a year from now. That will sort out the primary candidates and we'll end up with a nominee and a VP candidate. Until then, folks here on DU will call each other names, based on who they support in the primary races.

With any luck, all that animosity will disappear once we have a nominee...just like it did before...oh...wait...

We can't have a portion of the Democratic and progressive independent base who will go all out to support their candidate in the Democratic nomination process (as they did in 2016) so pissed off in November of 2020 (as they were last time around) that they will be totally unenthusiastic about supporting the ultimate Democratic nominee or worse.
